Okay... so, Halloween is coming... and as a Baptist, we pretty much avoided this holiday. I'm looking for input into how to "celebrate" this Catholicly... Thanks.

My family didn't celebrate Holloween. What we did is we went to somewhere on a "field trip" we were homeschooled. It would be a museum or Aquarium or somewhere like that. Then on All Saints day we had a homeschool party where we all dressed up as different saints. We would stand up in front of everyone and say who we were and a little about the saint. It was really cool.

Why don't you start an All Saints day party at your Church?

oh. Fact about Halloween.
Halloween is "all hallows eve" kinda like Christams Eve for All Saints Day.

However, some way down the road is was also a pagan celebration. They would run up hills in a race and families would light fire and stuff like that. My mom did some research when I was in 4th grade.

Kilroy the Ninja

I know the origins and I still celebrate it with zeal! But there are multiple origin stories for Halloween so one can kinda pick and choose...

For most people it is now a fairly harmless holiday where kids (and playful adults!) dress up, get candy, have fun with friends and neighbors and butcher autumn squash. It's fun! I love seeing the kids costumes and playing creepy music and giving out candy and I can't wait for this holiday 'cause the baby Ninja Crusader (that's my son for those of you who don't know) can really walk now! Just hope it doesn't rain! :ninja: :witch:

Thy Geekdom Come

I like celebrating this with all the scary stuff, if not for traditions sake, then because it does remind us of our mortality and that there is evil in the world.

Maybe a good way to bring back some Catholicity into it is to remind the kids that Christ, the Light of the World, keeps the demons away. Maybe give them flashlights when they go trick or treating and tell them to shine the light if they are scared and that it represents Christ (of course, depending on the children, they might think it's the flashlight itself and think it's a kind of magic...). Perhaps another way is if you go trick or treating with them, dress up as saints and protect them from all the monsters.

I love Halloween! It's so much fun. David will be too young to trick or treat, but I hope there's a Halloween party somewhere. I'd like to dress up this year. If not, I might just dress up and hand out the candy. Personally, I was brought up to believe that Halloween was just a fun day to dress up, be scared, and get candy.
