MorphRC
Jerome, St Jerome, St, in Latin, Eusebius Hieronymus (c. 347-419), Father and Doctor of the Church and biblical scholar, whose most important work was the Vulgate translation of the Bible into Latin. Jerome was born in Stridon, on the border of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia, about 347. After study in Rome, he journeyed to the desert, where he lived as an ascetic and pursued the study of Scripture. In 379 he was ordained a priest. He then spent three years in Constantinople with the Eastern Church father, St Gregory of Nazianzus. In 382 he returned to Rome, where he became secretary to Pope Damasus I and gained much influence. Many people placed themselves under his spiritual direction, including a noble Roman widow named Paula and her daughter, both of whom followed him to the Holy Land in 385. He fixed his residence at Bethlehem in 386, Paula (later St Paula) having founded there four convents, three for nuns and one for monks; the latter was governed by Jerome himself. There Jerome pursued his literary labours and engaged in controversy not only with the heretics Jovinian and Vigilantius and the adherents of Pelagianism, but also with the monk and theologian Tyrannius Rufinus and with St Augustine of Hippo. Because of his conflict with the Pelagians, Jerome went into hiding for about two years. He died soon after his return to Bethlehem, in 419 or 420. His feast day is September 30. This one line here: In 379 he was ordained a priest. He then spent three years in Constantinople with the Eastern Church father, St Gregory of Nazianzus. Proves that theory wrong. Not to mention the Eastern Rites, Byzantine etc.
