Okay Freshies !! lol Colleen and I were discussing the truth of becoming a college student and what is ahead of all of you so we thought we would begin a thread for college students like Colleen and myself to explain to the new Freshmen about what they have to look forward to. I'll begin with a good note though. Congrats to all of you on graduating High School and wonderful for yall to be going to college.

Okay truth number 1 from me lol

Be prepared for a shortage of sleeping !! I'm talking about maybe 3 to 4 hours tops !!

You'll learn to appreciate the naps you were able to take in Kindergarten because in college there is no rest lol

Some advice:

Try to make a schedule beforehand. Figure out when you have the most free time and what time of the day you study best. Usually, by the end of the semester, this falls apart, but it's nice to have something somewhat structured at the beginning, so you start off on the right track, and don't burn yourself out early.

Don't study non-stop. Take little 15 minute breaks every now and then. Sometimes it's better to just sleep than study an extra hour. Also, if you re-read your notes right before you fall asleep, you'll oftentimes remember them better in the morning. Believe me, I don't know how many times I went to bed after reading my Spanish notes, and then I would wake up in the morning thinking in Spanish.

Naps are your friends.

Talk to others about how little sleep you got and how much studying you have to do. I found that I felt better when I did this, because I didn't feel like I was the only one. It motivated me . . . somehow.

Try not to put off projects too long. It's so easy to fall behind. Read a little bit each day. It's so worth it.

Go to class. Seriously, this may sound silly, but really, just go to class. Then you automatically have a lot less stress on your mind.

Take care of yourself. Eat healthy food. Make a good effort to get a good night's sleep. If this isn't possible, try to take naps. Even a couple minutes can be really refreshing.

Don't worry too much. Take the time to have fun. If you don't be even a little bit goofy, you're going to get so stressed out. Watch a Disney movie and sing along with your friends.

Pray. Sometimes it seems like you have no clue how you're going to finish that paper in time, and it helps just to pray. Rely on God. Ask Him for help. Ask St. Thomas Aquinas to help you with your studies. Ask your Guardian Angel to help you remember things.

Don't be afraid to ask for help! If anything, ask TOO many questions! Bother your professors with questions -- they love it, I'm not kidding. It's part of their job, too. Don't miss out on that. This also goes for classmates. Ask their advice. Have study partners.

Most of all, don't let everything you've heard intimidate you. You can have all the advice and hear all the stories in the world, but you're never going to really know how it goes until you've experienced it yourself. It's really not that bad. You can handle it! smile College is what you make of it. Don't worry! Have fun! :)

Okay on a serious note this is some major advice. Please be sure to save your research papers on back-up discs. Thank goodness I did because the day before my Final Research Paper was do my computer crashed. So please do this !!
If you ever fall asleep in the library, don't feel bad about it. If you look around, you'll find you're not alone.
yeah usually I'm one of the ones asleep too ;)

Pj pants and tshirts will become your regular uniform to wear to class. A) because they are comfy and B) because you are too tired when you wake up to bother getting dressed lol

It's true.

But then again, sometimes it's the only thing that keeps you sane . . . and lets others know that you still exist. :hide:

You will no longer put on make up or worry about your hair, you'll be to tired to really care
And everyone else around you is too tired to care, too.

And maybe just too tired to see clearly, as well.
