1. what degree is necessary before a person can teach theology at the college/university level? masters in theology? doctorate?

2. is there any financial aid available for someone who wants to obtain a graduate degree in theology? i always assumed this would be expensive, but someone told me today that schools practically pay you to go there and get a grad degree b/c there are so few catholics who are willing to pursue this education.

3. if you are obtaining, or have obtained a graduate-level theology degree, how much did yours cost? how much aid did you receive?

4. where did you obtain your graduate degree? also, convince me that i should go to your school.

5. what are some good schools to attend to obtain a theology degree (besides Stuebenville and Catholic University)? also, please list why you consider this to be a good school to attend.

thanks pham,
nick

Most places will not hire unless they have a doctorate or working on it at the time.

And there are huge scholarships, most places will pay at least half, and there is alot of money out there.

At University of Dallas it is 785 an hour, which I think to be pretty competative. I am not going to have to pay for any of it. Full time student is 8 hours.

Mark Lowery is the only professor that I have had contact with and he is rad, (I just started) also teaching there is John Neuhouse (sp?) and it is in the south, the cost of living is cheap and the Job market is good for us Theo Grads in Texas. UD has an established program with a good name and huge Alumni network.
I have several ties that keep me in the states, but go to Rome if you can. duh. Also Boston College for Philosophy is something to look at.

Nick you are the man.

Wow, lucky you, I only got a $1000 grant for each semester. The theology MA at Steubenville is $510 per credit.

God bless,
Todd

Ah yes, when I was undergrad at SF State University, I received Pell Grants, and they covered everything. In addition, because it was a State school I only had to pay $967 per semester as full time undergrad student for tuition, not counting books. For my second BA I had to pay the tuition, because the Pell Grants only covered getting one Bachelors Degree.

God bless,
Todd

I am a GRADUATE student. BTW I already graduated with two degrees [theology and philosophy] and did really well so that I qualified for all kinds of Grants and Scholarships, plus I have really supportive parents.

I went to school at Carrol College in Helena Montana, a “Catholic” school. I majored in psychology and I minored in theology. I liked the school and I learned a lot there. I got good grades because it was too cold to be outdoors and without a car the only thing to really do was to study. I was too ignorant at the time to know any better but looking back the theology teachers were very wacky and not orthodox. I could give some kooky stories but I wont. I would not recommend Carrol College to get a theology degree.

One thing that they did not have at Carrol College was Eucharistic adoration. Any school that you look at, this would be one of the questions that I would ask.

For my first two years of college I went to Southern Utah University and got a scholarship playing football. After that, I got loans and to this day my parents are paying it. I’m blessed to have parent that have made this sacrifice for me. We are paying for my wife’s student loans and if I had my loans to pay off, things would be really tuff. I don’t know if this helps but there you go.

Nope, there are grants and fellowships [and low interest loans] out there like you would not believe, espcially if you are trying to Study Catholic Theology.

Just do a google search and bam there you are.

I could have gone to Ave Maria, Naples on a Full ride in their Masters program, and I all I had to do was ask (the reason that I could not go was it would have been impossible to do marriage prep).
