ironmonk
Could you translate that to simple AshWednesdaySpeak rather than Theologese? I think I get what you're saying, but maybe I'm one of the dumb ones Monk is talking about. Then "forgive me" or "bless me" is fine either way? So I've gotten my bloomers in a bunchie over something that was fine all along? Oops. At least I haven't whined about it aloud to anyone except on this board where I could get the facts straight.
No... you are not dumb... Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying.... Take for instance the people that believe we worship the Pope... and they never seek an answer from a real Catholic source if we worship the Pope... those people are dumb. People that believe that republicans want to take food away from the poor from what democrat politicians say, and they never seek the answer from the republican in question to what their plan is about... those people are dumb. People that push on an ice dispenser on a refrigerator, and nothing comes out for five seconds or so, and they keep pressing on it, when they hear the motor cranking and no ice coming out... those people are dumb and don't know how to think... open the freezer and look to see what the problem is. People that get a pop up notice on their computer with a warning message or something like that, and do not read it, then ask me what it is before reading it... those people are dumb. People that know the Catholic Church had the authority and was guided by the Holy Spirit to give us the NT, and know that Christ said the Church would never be overcome... and they say that the Church lost it's authority... those people are dumb... they are dumb because they either haven't studied or because they wish to reject the ones sent by Christ. People that riot... are dumb. People that get in physical fights over watching a sport... are dumb. People that try to argue a point without giving it thought and/or study... are dumb. People that reject God... are dumb. etc.... We all do dumb things at one point or another, but there are those people who just do not know how to think and are dumb - stupid. Ash Wednesday
Oh no... I wasn't referring to you, Ironmonk. My statement about being dumb was just in jest. I totally understand what you're saying. I was having a blonde moment and was confused by Apotheoun's following reply regarding the use of the term "forgive me father":
The priest is an instrumental cause in the sacrament of penance. The whole sacramental system is based on instrumental causality. An instrumental cause is a true cause, but not necessarily the efficient cause in every case.
When a simple "yes" or "no" as to whether or not both "bless me father" and "forgive me father" is actually said in confession, would have sufficed with regards to my question. (Apotheoun you're a little ahead of me in the game...) :cheer: No biggie. Without a doubt, there are too many stupid people in this world, and they spoil all the fun. :wavey:
mmmerf
Meh. I thought it was cute, but most of the jokes were a little forced. Not really funny. But there it is. Dave

God Bless, ironmonk
1st - The film was ok and I was not offended but then again I do not know the intent of the filmmaker to really take it serious. If it was Michael Moore then I might take offense because of his agenda as opposed to maybe Mel Brooks. 2nd - Not to turn this into a "Stupid people" thread but I was an IT manager for 10 years and 16 years in the IT field and I have found that people are more apathetic than stupid. Actually I have found that upper management leaned more towards the stupid than the end user. Stupid people cannot comprehend or decipher data given to them. Lazy people rather have you do it. Lazy people are sheep and believe everything told to them without question because it is too much work to find out for themselves. If half of the non Catholics actually were bothered by the holes in their doctrine and searched for the Truth then our parishes and rectories would be stacked. My opinion. Mary's Knight, La
i can sorta see what ironmonk is saying but it struck me as similar to Chesterton's Fr. Brown almost the perfect paradox of in the world but not of the world. it does provide an interesting idea of going to where the sinners are too. Warning What follows is OVERANALYSIS: While such an idea would be open to abuse of the sacrament, it does provide a wonderful picture of what the church's mission is. Not to call us to neglect our lives but to sanctify our lives. Take out the $2.00 for confession and find priests willling to try it and i think it'd be a novel attempt that may be capable of doing some good. make it less obvious from the outside that it is also a confessional, and you take away even more fake reasons to not go to confession. I'm all for respect and reverence but i'd rather someone make their confession in a cab on the way to somewhere rather than decide they're too busy. MichaelFilo
The priest is in his boxers. The no eating except the Body and Blood sign. The simony. The abuse of the sacrament. These are things that are wrong. There is nothing cute about taking the sacraments out of context. Also, as ironmonk said, people who watch this stuff are contempt to accept that all confessions are like it, if they know no better. A priest in his boxer is not funny. Joking about the Eucharist will NEVER be funny or right. Simony was banned, and no one will ever care to find out if they are protestant. Even from a non-religious stand point this wasn't funny. is this offenseive? Yes. God bless, Mikey
picchick
The movie was border line. It made me a little uncomfortable to watch. It was like it was making fun of the confession. However, the "priest" had some wisdom that I think the world needs to see.
MichaelFilo
And no pants on. While I don't know the full intentions of the movie, disrespect for the Eucharist, or any sacrament, but esp. the most sacrament of Life, should never be "funny". I regret everyday I joked about the Eucharist. There is NOTHING funny about Jesus's sacrafice. The "good" priest in the movie wasn't so good. Simony, the no pants, the messy van. He was so worldly, and it made me feel more than uncomfortable. I still think all these things are wrong and give a bad impression upon a world that enjoys to take the first thing it knows about something and cherish it as truth. O.o, maybe I'm being too harsh, but I don't think so. God bless, Mikey
picchick
No I get your point completly. The world takes anything that makes fun of the Church and say "See? It is all really true." I still say that what the priest said was something that much of the world needed to hear even if the movie was offensive.
MichaelFilo
Agreed. The priest did convey a nice message. I just wish the director could of went about it differently. It still wasn't very funny. Oh well, God bless, Mikey
