Fides_et_Ratio

I thought it was funny. I guess it depends on how seriously you take it. I looked at it like a joke. The only thing that bothered me was the simony, really. And that they didn't really go through the Sacrament using the proper formula.

Other than that, it was amusing.

I actually thought it wasnt that bad and was in a sense showed the healing power of the sacrament. It wasnt meant to be offensive or knock Catholismc i dont think and watching it and i think it gave a fairly accurate view of the healing that can occur in the sacrament.

The charging for confession I thought was bad.

Non-Catholics are going to see this and think things like the Church charging for Confession.

Ash Wednesday

Some parts of it was on the edge (like the woman yelling the "GD" at the cab)
But I thought it was kinda cute. Now, if they did have such a thing, maybe it would get more people to go to confession. ^_^

We have to keep in mind that people sneer at the passing of the collection basket, too, and refuse to let their blinders down, clinging to their safe haven of ignorance.

If people really are going to be led to believe that an off the wall skit like Papal Cab represents Catholicism, then they are really, really stupid and not using the brain the good Lord gave them.

The one thing that I find particularly objectionable, and this is found in the general public in LOTS of jokes and movies, and is one of the biggest things that makes people misunderstand confession despite it being a small twist on the use of words -- the inaccurate statement "forgive me Father for I have sinned."

Isn't "Bless me Father for I have sinned" the accurate opening request? Using the word "forgive" makes people think that you come directly to the priest for forgiveness when the priest is really mediating between you and Christ.

Seeing that in movies and on television always rubbed me the wrong way for the reasons mentioned.

I don't know. I was taught "Forgive me Father for I have sinned" in Catholic school. Interesting point you bring up though.

In general, people are stupid, and people do not know how to think - they do not have the common sense to look things up from the proper source when making a judgment on something... The average IQ is only 100... that means that there are a lot of below average people. They believe kerry is a good guy when they know he flip flops on every issue. People have a mob mentality.

I think that people who want to do skits on the Church, need to get the Church right... not smear it like it's a company trying to make a buck.

The priest is an instrumental cause in the sacrament of penance. The whole sacramental system is based on instrumental causality. An instrumental cause is a true cause, but not necessarily the efficient cause in every case.

Kilroy the Ninja

I thought they could have done without the charging for confession, but other than that it was humorous, had a good message, and may or may not be a good idea for New York. :P

However, the Jewish one.... uh, ew.

I rather enjoyed it, except for the simony. I thought it was good to show a priest in such a light, kind, thoughtful etc. I'd rather them have that view of the church than the view the scandals have caused.

peace...

Could you translate that to simple AshWednesdaySpeak rather than Theologese?

I think I get what you're saying, but maybe I'm one of the dumb ones Monk is talking about.

Then "forgive me" or "bless me" is fine either way?
So I've gotten my bloomers in a bunchie over something that was fine all along?

Oops. At least I haven't whined about it aloud to anyone except on this board where I could get the facts straight.
