Good question. I guess it depends on what one defines as martial art and what the definition is for sport.

I'm inclined to think it's a martial art because it's kind of a traditional japanese style. A lot of grappling/throwing, not as "glamorous" looking but you sure learn a lot. I wish I could do kani basami... (crab claw/flying scissors throw) ........that is soooooo rad!

I think now, in the modern sense it might be considered more of a "sport", particularly with it now being in the Olympics, like boxing and wrestling. I would say it began as a martial art originally, though.

How would you define something as a martial art? (Just curious) :) I've actually not thought much of the two definitions (except ITF vs. WTF taekwondo... one is art, the olympic style is definitely "sport")

One that is more for display of an art form, less of a competition, more use of weapons?

Well, i think that Martial Arts are art forms, rather than being about throws as in Judo, or punches as in Boxing. Im really rubbish at explaining things, give me a while to think about what im trying to say, and then ill try again

Ok, Judo can be a sport or a Martial Art, as can all Martial Arts. I believe that Judo has been exposed more as a sport than a Martial Art. I think this could possibly be because its techniques are the same wherever it is taught, so it can be a part of the olympics etc. as a sport, whereas other Martial Arts, for example, Karate, have many different styles, whereas, those in Judo are known the world round and are also used in other sports such as wrestling, which people understand more about than they do about Martial Arts.

I could say a lot more, but im doubting that im really making sense and what im trying to say is coming through correctly, so thats me done for now........

Cool -- someone in town here teaches Shotokan too. Really cool stuff -- I'd consider dabbling with Karate, too.
