Maddalena
o.o My Daddy told me that as long as you use it for your own personal use and don't share it with anyone else, then it's fine to download stuff. o_o
MorphRC
Copyright Laws only allow 10% or one chapter[book] to be copied. Thats here in australia anyways.

jasJis
Read the other threads that was provided. It's not about our judgement whether certain parties receive enough $$ in our 'opinion'. It's about upholding the right of a person to their intellectual property. An artist has every right to a song they create. Music and record companies are the (imperfect) means they have to sell, distribute, and earn a living from their work. Even if record companies rip off the consumer (questionable), it does not give us the right to undermine the system that an artist has to earn a living without providing a real and viable alternative (which we do not). Couple that fact with the moral duty to respect societal authority (and give Ceasar what is Ceasar's). Down loading songs from illegal sites is illegal. If you have a license from McDonald's, you must use the designated site. There are reasons why you can't burn them. You only received a limited license. By-passing the legal site may be undermining a legal alternative to the current record companies being created that can change how the artist can make a living. Making a mix CD for a friend (using CD's you own or legally downloaded) is a gray area. We may be introducing them to other artists as a form of advertisement for them so we are contributing to the possibility of the artist making a living. Making a number of the same mixed CD is different and is avoiding the legitimate purchase of the songs so we can save the $$ in buying a gift. MichaelFilo
The artist gets payed for more than just the CD's. The workers in the factories who make the CDs only make their profit from money that the CDs get. You really aren't doing the greatest crime against the artist, but against those people who actually manufacture it. And I don't think you can justify stealing from anyone, rich or poor. stagefairy
[quote]Abortion is immoral. Music? Well, abortion is immoral. Lot's of things are legal that are immoral. Abortion, contraception, premarital sex, etc. I know these may seem like much bigger things. But thou shalt not steal is one of the ten commandments, right? Just food for thought.

musturde
In middle east after 20 years are up the song is no longer to the artist but to the public, it can be resung by another artist or downloaded legally. I heard there was something similar in america too, cuz my friends mom was saying she went to a music site that charges 80 cents for each song and gives u the 20 yr old ones free. Downloading music is just as bad as burning and selling. The artists arent too fond of it... it's their art and its none of our biz to mess wit it unless we buy it. Ash Wednesday
Even if you are "leeching", i.e. not distributing files yourself, just downloading for "personal" reasons or to listen to a song to decide if you want the CD or not -- you may not be directly doing damage yourself, but if you are downloading illegal mp3s from a music pirate, you are still encouraging pirate activity -- where they gladly ARE ripping CDs and distributing the music. You can not make something good and right out of committing a wrong act, so the "Robin Hood" excuse of fighting the "big bad RIAA" doesn't fly, either. I think most experts in moral theology can agree on that.
stagefairy
Well, I threw away all my burned copies of CDs (not my back up copies, but copies of friends) a couple of weeks ago but today we went through our computer music library and deleted all of our downloaded music... ouch. But it's a good thing. Thanks, everyone for your input and thoughts. No really. I'm glad we did it.
