skuba steve
Read the following. Luk 10:38-42 As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him in her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat down at the feet of the Lord and listened to his teaching. Martha was upset over all the work she had to do, so she came and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself ? Tell her to come and help me!" The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha! You are worried and troubled over so many things, but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her." ************** In the passage there are two sisters, one chose to persue good deeds, the other chose to sit at the feet of her Lord and listen to him speak. What does Jesus place more importance in? Which of the following would Jesus rather me do? 1. Spend most of my time performing good deeds. 2. Spend most of my time learning about and developing the heart of Jesus. If I chose the second and it could not be taken away from me, does that still count if i fail to do good deeds? JP2Iloveyou
James says, "Faith without works is dead." Christ also says, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me." Christ todl the rich young man who asked him what must be done to inherit eternal life to, "Keep the commandments." Also, I don't have time to type this all out, but read Mathew 25: 31-46. God Bless. ironmonk
St. Matt 16:24 19 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, 20 take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 21 26 What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? 27 22 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct. Works are very important. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Matt 25:31 14 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, 32 and all the nations 15 will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' 37 Then the righteous 16 will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' 40 And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' 41 17 Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' 44 18 Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?' 45 He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' 46 And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." You must do good works. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Luke 12:47 That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; 48 and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. If you know the will of the Father, and do not do it, you will be punished. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Corin 11:15 So it is not strange that his ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. We will be judged by our deeds, our works. Preachers who say that all you need is faith and it doesn't matter what sins you do to get to heaven, are lying to you. The want your money. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Matt 10:22 You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end 10 will be saved. No one will be saved until the end. We must endure to the end, meaning we must do good works and have faith. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Matt 24:13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. We are not saved until the end. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Matt 7:1 1 2 "Stop judging, that you may not be judged. 2 For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. 3 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? We will be judged on how we judge others. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. John 3:19 9 And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. 21 But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. Works are important. Jesus says a lot... Faith and works are needed together. St. James 2:19 You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble. 20 Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works. skuba steve
what's more important??? why did Jesus tell Martha to calm down after she had been busting her butt to get ready for him and praise mary for sitting at his feet doing nothing??? we're talking about this passage..... these are the passages where we can clearly see the true heart of Jesus.... cmotherofpirl
If Jesus showed up at my door, I would run around and fuss, because I would want everything to be just right as well. Its what comes when you are in charge of a household. Martha wasn't doing good deeds, she was probably getting dinner ready etc. Martha honors Jesus thru work, Mary thru contemplation. Both are necessary. Jesus comment was to Martha not to expect her sister to stop being with him, to go do other things., to switch from one thing to another. Contemplation is the higher gift, but not everyone is called to it.
[jas]
Contemplation is the higher gift, but not everyone is called to it. Not everyone is called to sit at Jesus feet, to learn his heart, to become more like Him?
Dave
Not everyone is called to sit at Jesus feet, to learn his heart, to become more like Him? No, [jas], that's not what cmom meant. Not everyone is called to contemplation, but everyone is called to come sit at Jesus' feet and listen to Him, even though it may not always be done through contemplation. cmotherofpirl
,Sep 10 2003, 10:17 AM] Not everyone is called to sit at Jesus feet, to learn his heart, to become more like Him? Yes we are all called to sit at Jesus feet. But someone still has to cook the food and sweep the floor, so other people have the time to do it. Jesus didn't say what Martha was doing wasn't valuable, but that Mary had a different calling. We need Mary and Martha. This is reflected in the religious orders of the Church. Some sisters are called to teach and nurse and lead. Other nuns spend their lives praying daily and nightly for the rest of us. We all have different gifts. They work together... without one the other is in vain. How do you know what Jesus "true" heart is? How do you know what was meant 2000 years ago spoken in Aramaic? How do you know the Bible is an inpired work of God? To understand something of the bible, we must look at what the first Christians taught. We must look at the culture and society of when it was written. Jesus did not leave us with a bible, He left us with Peter and the Apostles; aka the One True Church. They ordained others, those others ordained others, and we have an unbroken chain all the way to Christ.... This same chain from the first teachers in the Church gave us the New Testament as Scripture because Jesus gave them the authority to. McSockPuppet
Look at I believe it's 2 cor. It states that Love is MORE POWERFUL THEN FAITH. Love, to me that seems like an action, therfore love, or the ACTION of loving is placed higher then faith.
JP2Iloveyou
With regards to the passage about Martha and Mary: if Jesus is right in front of you, yes you have an obligation to bow down and worship him. I realize the Protestants reading this won't accept the next part, but in my seminary, we are all required to spend at least one hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist, Jesus) a day. I do mine early in the morning when Jesus is exposed in a monstrance. Anyway, if I knew that Christ were down in our chapel and I decided instead to clean my room or do homework, or work out, or whatever, I would be guilty of the same thing Martha was guilty of. However, remember what Christ said, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, thay you do unto me." So, when we clothe the naked, vistit the sick and imprisoned, give drink to the thirsty, spend time with a child or an elderly person, hold a door open for someone, help someone with homework, etc, we do that for Christ. Imagine the following scenario: say Joe decides one day that he's going to "accept Jesus into his heart." So, he's saved right? What if the next day, Joe has sex with three women, one of whom becomes pregnant, kills a man, robs a bank, and blasphemes the name of the Lord. Then, he aids the woman carrying his child in getting an abortion. Is Joe still "saved?" Does being "saved" give us a liscense to do whatever we want, when we want? No! We can lose our salvation. Certainly, we didn't do anything to earn it. It is a free gift from God, however, we can refuse to accept that grace. Or, we can accept it and then give it back as Joe in my example did. In essence, he said, "I accept your grace Lord." But then, the next day, he turned around and gave it back. To some extent, we all do this because we are all sinful and weak. That is why we need the sacrament of Reconciliation to heal our relationship with God when we fail him.

Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her." By sitting at the feet of Jesus and allowing him to minister into your life, you will begin to understand what he wants you to do, you will begin to understand how he sees every person in this world and you will know your purpose. Martha was running around the place trying to prepare for Jesus, trying to gain his aproval from all she was doing, but she missed the point. All Jesus wanted was for her to spend time in a relationship with him. He wanted her to get to know him. That is want he wants most... If you don't spend time with Jesus, how do you know what you are meant to do? He isn't a slave driver, he's a mate. IronMonk, How do you know what Jesus "true" heart is?He lives in me... He shows me more of it everyday. How do you know what was meant 2000 years ago spoken in Aramaic How do you know the Bible is an inpired work of God?? The Holy Spirit guides me. I think the Holy Spirit is doing a lousy job then. How can he give all these people who claim He is guiding them conflicting ideas? Either all the people are wrong , or the Holy Spirit is wrong. Takes you choice, and place your bet.
