A Question
Before my conversion, as I allude to in one of the above threads, I was a king of piracy. I was the guy people would come to to get music, movies, software, or t.v. shows. When I returned from a life-changing trip from group of Franciscans, I was bothered, my conscience was bothered when I returned. I realized it was the result of all the pirated things I had owned. So I brought it to prayer and my, at the time, spiritual director.

He said to me, you can do all these other things but you cannot let go of this stuff? I said if you make it a penance I will be forced to get rid of all of the stuff. I will be honest, I did not want to get rid of anything. I had things that are only coming out on DVD now.

Anyway, he did make it my penance (I happened to be confessing these things to him at the time) and I did get rid of them. However, what was interesting throughout that whole experience was that as I was staring at my CD's, DVD's, etc. and pondering whether I should or not, I heard a voice, faint at first, then louder. It said, : "I have no love for half-hearted men." It occurred to me, I can do all these other things (devotions, prayer, penance, mortification) yet I was unable to let go of all that stuff. Needless to say, after the impact of that voice set in, I went outside and destroyed all of my CD's, reformatted my computers, dismantled the network, and to this day refuse to borrow or accept a burned CD / DVD.

It takes time, but you will see in the end, that it is all stuff and nothing more. You know the saying, "you can't take it with you." You really can't.

I came to that point too. I had LOTS of burned CD's and was even involved for a while with a group that would trade burned CD's and burn lots of copies for each other. It started as just a little prick of conscience that maybe I shouldn't do this anymore... then I realized that I shouldn't enjoy the fruits of stealing. "Mmmm.... these stolen chocolates taste good.... good thing I'm not stealing anymore, but I am happy to eat these." See? Also, my priest talks a lot about attachments... I am so attached to this that I would let it separate me from God?
what if he burns one back up copy and gives it to me??/ cuz if you are leagally allowed to burn one copy- then what does it matter if u give that to someone or not???
That's how I always looked at it too. But... I can't make myself see it that way anymore.

I am not judging anyone here. Still trying to define the lines myself. I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

I agree with the_rev, about it being morally wrong. But I do know that song artists are trying to make it more and more illegal. The FCC arrested and fined about 500 people or so about my age, and I believe that was in my state, Arizona. Im sure they are doing the same elsewhere. I can only hope that maybe with technology, the FCC can shut down any companies that try to sell music online, and anyone who does it illegally, can be tracked, so that we can end this corruption.

ahhhh!!!! oh well id rather throw the ones I burned (which is about 98% of them) out and buy them and follow Christ than burn in hell

btw i dont buy them new at a store for 15 bucks each- thats a rip off- i go to half.com and get them for about 4 or 5 bucks each- you cant beat it!!!!!!

i sound silly but maybe u guys could pray for me that i throw them out an get through "this" and have strength from God- YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE MY MUSIC!!!! but i love God a whole heck of a lot more so thats that

The original intent for CD burners was to put your own music, data, or other whatnot on a more Convient and much Bigger CD instead of a floppy...

I have several burned CDs but over half of them don't work anymore... I don't think there is much more I can do to them! It is fun destroying CDs though! :bounce:
