curtins
lets say my freind BUYS a cd from a store - is it illegal if he burned a copy for me?????
the_rev
Morally it isn't right. If I was to buy a Michael W. Smith cd, and Joey wanted me to make him a copy, he wouldn't of bought it, and he wouldn't help to support Michael W. Smith. Hmmmmmm.... I don't know if it is legal or not though

mmmerf
I generally have a rule that I never burn a cd by an artist who makes less money than me. But I realize that's shaky moral ground. And by 'shaky' I mean 'completely incorrect'. If you burn a CD, listen once, and then buy it, well, that's okay then. I copied a Righteous B CD onto my computer at work, listened through, and went to his website, and ordered the CD with my credit card, and that night slept the good sleep of the just. But it's the burning and not buying that's wrong and bad and stealing and stuff. Righteous B has in his liner notes "People who burn CDs and put them on the internet are as bad as people who push handicapped orphans down stairs." In the case of Christian CDs, I totally agree. Thy Geekdom Come
Illegal and immoral, in my judgment. A lot of people say that it's not stealing when it's from a big faceless corporation, but it is. What's more, think of the factory workers who make the CDs. They aren't getting paid the money they may need.

You're allowed legally to have one back up copy for personal use.

RemnantRules
lol Curtins. I know what you mean but the way i see it is if you really like this artist you are going to want the artist to make more music and to be able to come out with more cd's. Well one of their ways is obviously cd purchasing. That's how i always try to see it.

I don't want to sound self-righteous, but are you really concerned with what Jesus would do? I just mean...your bringing money into a moral argument which really has nothing to do with money. I snapped all my burned CDs in half. 2. It is moral for you to inform your friend of the illegality and immorality of this, but you can't really force her to give it back. I was the guy people would come to to get music, movies, software, or t.v. shows. When I returned from a life-changing trip from group of Franciscans, I was bothered, my conscience was bothered when I returned. I realized it was the result of all the pirated things I had owned. So I brought it to prayer and my, at the time, spiritual director. He said to me, you can do all these other things but you cannot let go of this stuff? I said if you make it a penance I will be forced to get rid of all of the stuff. I will be honest, I did not want to get rid of anything. I had things that are only coming out on DVD now. Anyway, he did make it my penance (I happened to be confessing these things to him at the time) and I did get rid of them. However, what was interesting throughout that whole experience was that as I was staring at my CD's, DVD's, etc. and pondering whether I should or not, I heard a voice, faint at first, then louder. It said, : "I have no love for half-hearted men." It occurred to me, I can do all these other things (devotions, prayer, penance, mortification) yet I was unable to let go of all that stuff. Needless to say, after the impact of that voice set in, I went outside and destroyed all of my CD's, reformatted my computers, dismantled the network, and to this day refuse to borrow or accept a burned CD / DVD. It takes time, but you will see in the end, that it is all stuff and nothing more. You know the saying, "you can't take it with you." You really can't.
