qfnol31
Catholic Culture says of that site: The site condemns the war in Iraq using inflammatory language. It makes it seems as if the Church itself is teaching that the war is mortal sin. (Fidelity)
qfnol31
Rechanged to a question, can a Bishop really do that? Edited August 4, 2004 by qfnol31
Aloysius
True. But he doesnt over-ride the Pope.
yep. the Pope and Cardinal Ratzinger agree, Catholics are not bound to agree with the Pope's opinion about the Iraq war.
Aloysius
the Bishop has the authority to bind and loosen, he is the Shepherd of that flock. it would be a mortal sin of direct disobedience for a Catholic under that bishop to give their support to the war. MorphRC
The pope said the Iraq War is Unjust. Therefore its unjust. Either follow the Pope or follow your President.
qfnol31
I'm not following the President so much as what I believe fits into Catholic Theology.
Aloysius
I follow the CHURCH. the CHURCH says I don't have to agree with Pope John Paul II's opinion regarding whether or not Saddam Hussein was an imminent threat.

Aloysius
yeah but they do have authority over their flock. the faithful under that bishop are obligated to listen to his warning which he gave using his full authority to bind and refrain from supporting the Iraqui War. If they truly feel it is their duty to support the war, they should go all the way up to Rome for permission.
qfnol31
I agree that disobedience would be wrong, but I do not think it would be a mortal sin for them to support the war as it could be for them to disagree with the Bishop...hmm, I wouldn't want to live there. qfnol31
1700! I take that back, the Bishop is probably wrong because the USCCB has said that we can support the war (it's our duty to choose) and he's an American Bishop, so he's under the USCCB. Therefore he's going against the higher authority.
