Rocco
Okay, where does the Church stand with the Greek Orthodox Church. How do we as catholics view the Greek Orthodox Church? Our religions are virtually the same so what is keeping us from a reunion? Do we as catholics believe that there consicration is legit? Anything you know would be a help. Thx, Rocco
Pio Nono
JMJ 8/3 - St. Senach Rocco, Good question. The Greek Orthodox Church is currently in schism with Rome; "schism" means that a particular church holds the beliefs that are our own, but do not recognize the authority of the Roman Pontiff as we understand it. This is what keeps us from reuniting, among other things. The Greeks, for instance, are wary of accepting the "filioque" clause in the Nicene Creed - this clause comes up when we say, "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son". The "and the Son" part is not originally part of the Nicene Creed, but a Spanish ninth century addition. There's nothing wrong with it, but the Greeks are wary. And yes, since the Greeks have retained apostolic succession (meaning they have legit bishops and priests), their sacraments are cool. However, unless you're stuck on a Greek island for a few months, you aren't allowed to receive them (except when in danger of death). Hope this helps.
