Grrrr....another Ticket

I got another speeding ticket! Blah. I had just barely come off a 70 zone and entered a 55 zone. State police were just sitting there waiting for peoples who didn't slow fast enough. He told me "You were going 71 in a 55 zone, but I"ll be kind and only write the ticket for 5 over".

The Jerk. I'm sorry, that isn't nice. But jeez. Here in Michigan it isn't about speeding (even cops speed all the time, like 90-95 in a 70 zone. It's all about money. The difference in the fine for going 1 over to going 30 over is $5. It's a $100 fine regardless. Blah. And I really can't contest it and try to get it thrown out because the guy is from hicksville, USA and probably has nothing better to do with his time then get the court their 100 dollars.

Was I breaking the letter of the law? Yeah. Was I breaking the intent of the law? no. There was absolutely nothing reckless about my speed. What irks me the most is now I'll have to find a different insurance provider because the car was on storage insurance and we barely drive it. So they are going to throw a fit as will the lien holder.

God Bless America.

I hear you on that! It's the same, from what I've seen, in Canada.

I'm working this summer for the federal government, and was up north doing some surveys. I was 3/4 through a turn, when another truck exited the offramp from the highway down the street(the speed limit on the offramp is 30kph, they were going three times that, easy), ignoring the yield and slamming into my truck.

The truck spun wildly... and massive damage was done. The driveshaft was dragging on the ground. Thankfully, I *was* 3/4 through the turn... if they had hit us closer to the front of the truck, I wouldn't be posting right now.

The police came, said not one word to the guys in the other truck, and ticketed me... telling me that it didn't matter one bit who was at fault, but that I was automatically because I had been making a turn.

Ridiculous.

I'd fight it all the way.... but i know the kind of cops you are talking about and in that case i would leave it alone and cough up the cash. Sorry dude, that smells of elderberries.

The one and only time I ever got a speeding ticket was a couple of years ago. It was after bible study, I had my kids in the car and we were meeting up with some other bible study friends for lunch. Needless to say, they saw me stopped. That was a loooooong lunch. I'll never live that down. (course we don't go that church anymore... hmmm... ) And, my two kids were in the car. but I suppose after 18 years of driving, it was bound to happen... Just wish I hadn't had such a big audience.

I didn't realize you were from michigan! are you involved with the Opus Dei group from Notre Dame?

They send people to ft. wayne every week, the same may be true fer grand rapids. If not, you might be able to visit them at windmoor (the name of their house at Notre Dame) or you might be able to talk them into sending someone up. (if you get 5-10 strong Catholics who are interested, they'll prolly come.)

hehe there *really is* a town called hicksville ohio.

Peace,
Joe :)

I drive though speed traps the whole way to and from work. In fact, my commute is 35 minutes. I'll admit, I don't always obey the letter of the law, and I'm not one to hold myself as the example. But whenever I think about it (often enough) I drive just like I was taking my driving test, with the trooper in the car with me. Praying the rosary while driving helps too.

Neverthless, I've gotten my fair share of unfair speeding tickets, and I feel you.

I've gotten a lot of tickets, something like five tickets and two warnings in 10 years. I like driving fast ...

A couple of years ago for Lent, I gave up speeding, and tried to drive exactly the limit for six weeks. It was SO HARD to do. Other stuff, like chocolate or caffeine, is relatively easy to avoid, but I have to drive. It's would be like sitting down every day in front of a chocolate chip cookie if you're giving up chocolate. I didn't do it perfectly, but close.

My latest ticket I got in October, and forgot about it through the holidays, and found out when I went to renew my license that I'd been suspended. ha ha. Now I'm reinstated, trying to keep the speed down ...
