Brother Adam
Teresa and I spent the day today in Machinac Island off the coast of Lake Huron (part of Michigan - HUGE tourist attraction). We visited St. Anne's Catholic Church on the island to find out it is the oldest parish in the country and contains the oldest written document in the United States - the baptismal record - dating back to 1695, almost 100 years before the US constitution was drafted. How awesome is that?
BurkeFan
Hm... weird. I thought that title belonged to Holy Family Parish in Cahokia, Ill. St. Anne is nice, a Jesuit friend of mine did alot for the museum down there.
luciana
That's cool What about St. augustine, Florida or is that the place with the first or longest running place with a Catholic Mass in the USA?
Andrea348
I was to Macinac Island before. It was so cool because there are no cars allowed. I don't think we went to the church though, my family is not really into that. I don't think I was into that at that point either, I was only in like 7th grade. theculturewarrior
That's strange...I would have thought it would have been in St. Augustine too, but it is possible that they didn't get past the mission stage for a long time.
Brother Adam
It kindof surprised me too, but both the Michigan Historical Society and the Church confirmed it, and they did have the documentation on when the church was founded and the actual baptismal record from 1695. Brother Adam
That's right, no cars are allowed on the island. The fastest way around is by bicycle or horse and buggy. They do have 2 cars on the island actually though - one is an ambulance and one is a fire engine. If you ever have the chance to visit it is well worth the $17 ferry ride over to the island. You just have to avoid the hundreds of little touristy shops (compose about 5% of the island) and get into the rest of the island. It's home to Michigans only Revotionary War fort, there is an awesome newly renovated lighthouse, you can go to a water-powered sawmill, just all sorts of neat stuff. Sojourner
And they are famous for their chocolate fudge, right? I think I remember that.
Brother Adam
Oh yes. Fudge. *drools* We bought a pound and a half of it. I think there are more fudge shops on this island than anything else. lol. All the prices are the same though whereever you go and the fudge is made the same way. So I don't get it, but okay. Carnanc
wow we usually drive every summer from Minnesota to east leland in the northwest Lower Peninsula and drive past Machinac island I think. Its always been so expensive so we have never checked it out. sounds pretty sweet though.
