picchick
"freedom of conscience for Catholics with respect to these choices [abortion, etc.], and that is exactly where I am." As Catholics we have a duty to form our conscience correctly. The Church is there to help. With her guidelines of morality and teachings, (which the Church did not make up) we can form our consciences correctly.

Thy Geekdom Come
"freedom of conscience for Catholics with respect to these choices [abortion, etc.], and that is exactly where I am."
You know, I had a moral theology teacher in seminary who tried to pull that kind of stuff on the students. Boy were we angry. The Catechism says that people should always follow their consciences, so this teacher (a priest, what's more), said that we could disregard the Church if we thought otherwise (of course, if that were the Church teaching, then I could disregard it and just follow the Magisterium, right? ). Well the trouble is that the same section in the Catechism says that we should form our Catechism off the teachings of the Magisterium. Therefore, we cannot disregard the Magisterium.
