Madonna
Does anyone else feel like they'll slap an Imprimatuer on anything sometimes? I noticed this especially in my Catholic religion textbooks back when I was in high school. Also, I am not positive if they have an imprimatuer on them, but my dad's textbooks at the seminary are really sketchy (he's in the diaconate). And "catholic" publishing companies too. Paulist Press printed this book with the author's opinion on Catholicism...for a classroom textbook.
EcceNovaFacioOmni
I do. I know there are a lot bad ones out there, but I've only personally read one bad Catholic book (I usually look into orthodoxy before buying) with an Imprimatuer. Sadly, it was my high school religion textbook (Jesus of History, Christ of Faith), which attacked Biblical inspiration, put the writers of the Gospels into question, etc. Most of the bad books I've seen though, haven't even bothered to get ecclesiastical approval. catholicguy
Then, yes, I guess you can get one "slapped on anything."
EcceNovaFacioOmni
The NAB has four to be exact. It is mostly a problem of footnotes I believe, although the NAB Revised NT has gender inclusive language. I only read it when I can't understand the Douay-Rheims CR and only then because I don't have an RSV-CE on hand. I'm still mowing lawns for buying that hardcover Douay-Rheims CR... catholicguy
CR? Is that the revised version? I think I had a soft-cover revised version... I know a woman from my church who has a very old un-revised version, but I didn't think that there was a DRV produced that was not based on the revised Vulgate anymore... Saint...Someday :)
Actually, Bishop Hughes of New Orleans gave a talk on the state of high school text books not too long ago...6 out of 200 (!) made the cut for actually teaching the Truth! It's sad really. Also-- Paulist ? There's the problem.
Yes, it's the Challoner Revision. I have never read the text from the original version of the D-R. I've seen the un-revised ones at online auctions before, but they are always huge and at a super-high prices. I'de like to see one someday just for kicks. The Catholic high schools are now only able to use specific textbooks. Alleluia. Now if only they would do something about our seminaries

EcceNovaFacioOmni
Saint Mary's Press (it's publisher) posted this excerpt from "Jesus of History, Christ of Faith" on their website. Check it out: http://www.smp.org/images/BookImages/Jesus...torypp24-47.pdf I can't stand it. There is also a link on their site to a Discovery Channel publication that "confirms and challenges teachings on Jesus". Comon... Saint...Someday :)
Not to add fuel to the fire, but when I was hearing Bishop Hughes state that there were only 6 textbooks that he would permit, he also stated that the USCCB was kicking around the idea of writing their own. What do you all think about that?
