Othodox Books?

Brother Adam

Recommended Posts

I got the impression that Frand and Maisies son isnt exactly...well, Catholic. Some of his books are questionable.

I made it a point to be careful of purchasing anything from Sheed and Ward after their deaths.
I tend to look for older 'versions' of their popular books first. Unless the books contain the proper eccesiastical approval.

Peace.

I'm wondering, just because Flynn has something objectionable in some of her material - does that necessarily totally bunk all of her other material? (I say this as I frantically look for the reciept. lol)

Well, no. I haven't read anything by Flynn, but as a basic rule, someone can be off in one area, but be really good in some other areas. For example, a Protestant, whose understanding of ecclesiology and the Eucharist would obviously be lacking, could have some wonderful stuff on the love of God or marriage, or something else.

However, if someone is off in one area, everything else by them should be read with some caution.

No, it doesn't follow of necessity that everything she has ever written in is error, but when a person holds a position in opposition to an infallible teaching of the Church (and ordination being reserved to men is such a doctrine), then I would say you must read anything she has written with great caution. But I still think that it is best to read authors that do not dissent from what the Magisterium has declared to be sententia definitive tenenda. That's the best advice I can give you about her other writings, since I have neither the inclination nor the desire to read the entire corpus of her theological work. To be honest, I'd much rather read approved authors who do not dissent on any infallibly taught doctrines of the faith.

I'll take the oppertunity here just to make a little warning, do NOT buy "The Everything Catholicism Book" (from the "Everything" series, which as a whole, isn't that bad), unless you are a member of WomenChurch or CFFC or just a regular old modernist.

"Catholicism for Dummies" is the best (even has ecclesiastical approval). It was written by two priests from EWTN. "The Complete Idiots Guide to Catholicism" is liberal (from what I've heard). "The Everything Catholicism Book" is overtly liberal. While not openly stating anything; it alludes that there could be a democratic Church, the Pope isn't infallible, waters down the Real Presence, women could someday become priests while somewhat trying to debunk an awful arguement for an all male priesthood. You get a "spirit of Vatican II" feeling when you read it.
