Kuya Lee
Hi people First of all, I love watching and learning from the debate table. I have been watching for over a year now and I have learnt so much. We are truly blessed with a community of bright, faithful Christians. I have only recently read about the life of St Padre Pio over the last day or two, and feel compelled to share some of his words on the Church with those who may have not come across them already. He truly was a man of exceptional holiness- of perfect Christ like service and obedience.. a physical and spiritual victim for Christ and a perfect son of St Francis. I felt this may be an appropriate place for people to hear and reflect on what St Padre Pio, one of our greatest saints, had to endure and what he had to say about his relationship with the Church Cheers Laurence --------------------------------------------- He gave his greatest proof of love for the Church during the harsh trials to which he was subjected. His behaviour during the ten long years of suffering was one of heroic obedience in silence and humility. When he was under the lash, so to speak, he had it in him to say, "Sweet is the hand of the Church, even when she strikes, for it is the hand of one's mother." ... We know the great respect and devotion with which he accepted the dispositions of the Holy See of Rome, even when they were against him. There were several times during half a century when the Father Superior had to enter Padre Pio's room to read a letter or document to him from the Church authorities which imposed sever measures upon him. Padre Pio would rise to his feet at once, listen with his head bowed, and at the end say, "I thank God!". Later he would weep and pray. ... "Notice that I made a will leaving everything to the Church; for I am a son of the Church. And when I no longer manage anything, my Mother will have to answer for all the offerings, even the coins, that souls from all over the world donate.." - St Padre Pio ... "You can say what you like, but I stand with the Church, and that is enough" - St Padre Pio ---------------- (Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, by Fr. Stefano M. Manelli)

Kuya Lee
what stiff measures did the Church subject him to?
I liked that quote Theo Heya PhatC Cos I've only read one small book on him, I'll just have to quote it directly- I hope it suffices. Perhaps if any one else can elaborate, feel free. I am sure our wonderful resident Capuchin Father knows much more than I ---------- There were two long periods of persecution when men crucified Padre Pio. The first was from 1923 to 1933. The second was from 1959 until his death. During the first persecution attacks were chiefly made on his person and ministry. During the second, the attack was on Padre Pio and his great work, that is, the Prayer Groups and the Home of the Relief of Suffering. During both persecutions there were serious calumnies and accusations against his doctrinal soundness, against his morals, his mental competence and against his practical prudence. Painful measures were taken. Several attempts were made to transfer Padre Pio from San Giovanni Rotondo to another place. --- From 1923 to 1933 his spiritual director was taken from him, he was forbidden to write letters, and he was required to celebrate his holy Mass in the morning before dawn. During the last two years of this period, Padre Pio was kept secluded in the friary, suspended form hearing confessions and forbidden to have any contact with the faithful. He could celebrate holy Mass only in the little private chapel of the friary with no one present but the server. Things continued this way until July 16 1933, when he was at last allowed to celebrate Mass again in the church and to resume hearing confessions. ... Certain offices of the Roman Curia conducted investigations and inquiries. The administration of the Home for the Relief of Suffering was taken out of Padre Pio's hands, and his Prayer Groups were left to languish. The faithful were advised not to assist at Padre Pio's Mass. An iron railing and barrier was set up around his confessional calculated to check the flow of penitents. ------
cappie
one of Padre Pio's sufferings was that unscrupulous people several times circulated prophecies which they claimed originated from him. He never made prophecies about world events and never gave an opinion on matters he felt belonged to church authorities to decide. Also, having the stigmata was a cause for concern which the church had to be convinced was from God, it's not uncommon for people sometimes from the best of motives to "dupe" people so the church is rigorous in its examination For example:Courier Mail

cappie
You may be interested in the following prayer, our Capuchin Order in Australia has printed the following prayer and distributed it to our parishes I think it is a beautiful prayer: PADRE PIO’S PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Stay with me Lord, For it is necessary to have You present So that I do not forget you. You know how easily I abandon you. Stay with me Lord, Because I am so weak and I need your strength, So that I may not fall so often. Stay with me Lord, For you are my life, And without You, I am without fervour. Stay with me Lord, For you are my light, And without You, I am in darkness. Stay with me Lord, to show me your Will Stay with me Lord, So that I hear Your voice and follow You Stay with me Lord, For I desire to love you very much, And always be in Your company. Stay with me Lord, If you wish me to be faithful to you Stay with me Lord, For as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consolation for You, A nest of love. Amen This was set to music by the Capuchin Province of St Augustine 220 37th Street Pittsburg. cmotherofpirl
I think that his extreme holiness was one of many reasons why he refused to take part in the liturgical revolution.
Wrong! A LETTER FROM PADRE PIO TO POPE PAUL VI -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A short time before his death, Padre Pio, having In mind the Audience which the Chapter Members of his Order would have in the course of their General Chapter, wrote a letter to Pope Paul. In the letter he expressed his firm adherence to the Magisterium and its teachings, particularly mentioning the recent encyclical, "Humanae Vitae". Padre Pio also expressed his obedience, devotedness and filial sharing in the anxieties of His Holiness. The full text is as follows: Your Holiness: Availing myself of Your Holiness' meeting with the Capitular Fathers, I unite myself in spirit with my Brothers, and in a spirit of faith, love and obedience to the greatness of Him whom you represent on earth, offer my respectful homage to Your August Person, humbly kneeling at Your feet. The Capuchin Order has always been among the first in their love, fidelity and reverence for the Holy See. I pray the Lord that its members remain ever thus, continuing their tradition of seriousness and religious asceticism evangelical poverty, faithful observance of the Rule and Constitutions, renewing themselves in vigorous living and deep interior spirit—always ready, at the least gesture from Your Holiness, to go forward at once to assist the Church in her needs. I know that Your heart suffers much these days on account of the happenings in the Church: for peace in the world, for the great needs of its peoples; but above all, for the lack of obedience of some, even Catholics, to the lofty teachings which You, assisted by the Holy Spirit and in the name of God, have given us. I offer Your Holiness my daily prayers and sufferings, the insignificant but sincere offering of the least of your sons, asking the Lord to comfort you with His grace to continue along the direct yet often burdensome way—in defense of those eternal truths which can never change with the times. In the name of my spiritual sons and of the "Praying Groups" I thank Your Holiness for the clear and decisive words You have spoken in the recent encyclical, "Humanae Vitae", and I reaffirm my own faith and my unconditional obedience to Your inspired directives. May God grant truth to triumph, and, may pence be given to His Church, tranquility to the people of the earth, and health and prosperity to Your Holiness, so that when these disturbing clouds pass over, the Reign of God may triumph in all hearts, through the Apostolic Works of the Supreme Shepherd of all Christians. Prostrate at Your feet, I beg you to bless me, my Brothers in religion, my spiritual sons, the "Praying Groups", all the sick—that we may faithfully fulfill the good works done in the Name of Jesus and under your protection. Your Holiness' most humble servant, PADRE PIO, Capuchin San Giovanni Rotondo, 12th September, 1968. Never ONCE did SAINT Pio say a word against the Catholic Church. Kuya Lee
Thank you, Cmom, you beat me to it I don't think catholicguy's comments have any substantial or factual basis- I had no idea when first posting that the topic of St Padre Pio and the Novus Ordo has become a veritable minefield. There seems to be much 'he says, she says' over what St Padre Pio's opinions were on the matter, and Ive tried to take what most have to say, especially the SSPX, with a grain of salt. Clearly the only words that can be faithfully trusted are St Padre Pio's own; and here we have them written 11 days before his passing giving his full and unyielding support to Pope Paul VI and the Second Vatican Council.
