XIX
First of all, I was wondering if there was a place where grave sins were listed, or what exactly grave matters are. I know a mortal sin has to be a very serious offense to God, I'm just wondering what these might be? Secondly, if somebody does commit a mortal sin, when and how does that person get out of it. Do you formally have to confess to a priest? Does it get wiped away the moment you repent? Finally, what is meant by "full consent of will?" I've always understood it to mean that unless you are in a state of vice, you never have that full consent of will. Because if you are not, then there is that conflict in your heart and something that is still trying to hold you back from sin. Please clear up any misconceptions that I might have here, and pray that I don't fall into liscentiousness with regards to venial sin. BLAZEr
Sorry, I doubt there is any list of grave sins. There are too many to list! A mortal sin is a sin that is grave which is commited deliberately, with free consent of the will (you aren't being made to do it), and awareness of its sinfulness. To be freed from the pains of mortal sin you must make a confession to the priest. The effect of the mortal sin is immediately wiped away during the words of absolution, which in order for them to be efficacious (to work) you have to be repentant. Full consent of the will means that you do something freely, not because you are addicted, not because you are being forced to do it (someone's holding a gun to your head, or you have no choice in some other way). The wrestling in your heart is normal, but that does not somehow imply that you don't have full consent. In fact, if you commit the sin and you wrestled with whether you should or not, you have in fact used your will to choose something you know was sinful. That's exactly what a mortal sin looks like. Maybe some of the Padres can clarify here!
