Hermione
I think Kill Bill was supposed to be a tribute Samurai movie. Everything about it's inspired by them. I don't think he meant for it to be an original piece; more like a tribute, like I said. Reservoir Dogs is funny. Steve Buscemi is hillarious. I agree that it doesn't say much; the only time he tries to make you think are the random dialogues that appear here and there... like the opening dialogue where they discuss what Madonna's "Like a Virgin"'s about... Other than that, it's just a comedy with guns and guts.. Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite movies. I've watched it a billion times and still never get tired of it. Samuel L. Jackson single-handedly carries this movie most of the time, the remaining bit is held up by John Travolta, so the other characters pretty much have an easy time. It's good because of the script & "plot"; it's the way the characters live on the edge, being gangsters and taking drugs & shots, yet they talk about the most mundane of things... it's just the harmony of it all that makes the show so brilliant. Natural Born Killers: he wrote this and sold it for very little. Oliver Stone took it up and did the directing. Basically I think Tarantino is an escapist. His films are always very anarchistic, about people living outside society. It's good cos it helps you escape too, without the consequences. Sometimes it even makes you wanna be the complete opposite of these characters cos their lives are just so fked up.
Hermione
Tarantino and Peter Jackson belong to different genres (at least the movies in question are from different genres). Tarantino's films are indie; LOTR is mainstream. Really can't compare. If you're comparing Tarantino to Stanley Kubrick or Darren Aronofsky... that's another story

Seatbelt Blue
Kill Bill is teh awexome. I'm a huge Kill Bill fan. I love kung fu flicks, b movies, westerns, and good music, and KB combines all these things. It's a simple revenge story - kind of like Lone Wolf and Cub - and these don't need a lot of subtext. Tarantino just wanted to pay tribute to the things he loves, the things he was raised on. Why do films have to raise questions? Why do films have to be deep a provocative? Why can't you just go in, enjoy an artfully-filmed piece and walk away happy?

Antonius
Tarantino and Peter Jackson belong to different genres (at least the movies in question are from different genres). Tarantino's films are indie; LOTR is mainstream. Really can't compare. If you're comparing Tarantino to Stanley Kubrick or Darren Aronofsky... that's another story
Quentin Tarantino is no longer indie. His films are funded by the studios, therefore he is dependent on them. Mel Gibson made an independent film this year, The Passion of the Christ. He paid for it all himself. Can you really call Kill Bill independent with all the advertising and hoopla around it? Practically everyone has heard of it... On top of that, Stanley Kubrick was not an indie director. He was mainstream, through and through. Would anyone consider The Shining or A Clockwork Orange or Spartacus or 2001: A Space Odyssey indie? Quentin Tarantino is the dog mushy mud pie on Stanley Kubrick's shoes. You cannot compare a pop culture icon to one of the greatest directors ever. It's impossible. I also must say Darren Aronofsky is a better director than Mr. Tarantino. Pi and Requiem for a Dream are much better and original than Quentin's. A tribute film? Ok then. All Kill Bill is merely a series of homages and tributes and copying of various Chinese and Japanese films. That's it. I believe that that does not merit anything on Tarantino's part, as anyone can make that. If you like those movies, check out the movies Tarantino is paying homage to! At least they're original and have their own creativity. The guy's an egomaniacal jerk who hasn't matured past the age of 14.

Noel's angel
I didnt bother with them either, they just seemed like some sort of low budget comedy. Pulp Fiction is def. the best. Edited August 20, 2004 by Noel's angel
