ironmonk
LIBERALS CAN’T HANDLE FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN AZ By J. Grant Swank, Jr. Jul 9, 2004 According to The Arizona Republic, Democrats did not at all favor the opening prayer in the State House. They became quite upset, even so far as to broadcast their own definition of what kind of prayer should begin sessions. It was Representative Doug Quelland of Phoenix who dared stir up the prayer pot. And stir it he did. But of course he must have known full well what he was doing in quoting a prayer that’s been winding round and round through emails and internet and snail mails since first offered to the heavenly courts in 1996. It’s original footing was before the Kansas House of Representatives. Nevertheless, stir or no stir, Quelland presented the prayer to the good Lord above, then sat down. With that, offended Democrats, headed by Representative Wally Straughn of Phoenix, handed over to the authorities their own printed protest, claiming that the petition to the divine was "partisan, disrespectful and divisive." With the prayer reading for the umpteenth time, I could not help but conclude that Democrats — at the moment flinging their own versions of hate speech and manufacturing their own definitions of what verbiage is democratically tolerated and what isn’t — could decry freedom of speech in the Arizona House chambers. After all, freedom being what it is, should not the Democrats simply live with what Quelland offered so as to let God decide what is acceptable or not? After all, the ultimate recipient of all petitions is meant to be Creator God. Therefore, however mortals review prayers, it is best left to the Lord. According to His Word, He is the origin of discernment, particularly motives from which prayers spring. Further, it is He who decides what petitions are baptized for divine approval. Consequently, it would be wise for Democrats to leave matters — including prayers in particular — with the divine judgment or mercy. Who knows? If the petition offered by Quelland is unacceptable to God, He will discipline Quelland. If it is acceptable, dare the Democrats touch it? In any case, in case you have not read the prayer offered in 1996, here it is: "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know your word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values. We confess that:

We have ridiculed the absolute truth of your word and called it pluralism.
We have worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have abused power and called it political savvy.
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
And we have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
"Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. "In the name of your son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen." ___________________________________ God Bless, ironmonk

Guest JeffCR07
It is a good prayer. I am particularly impressed with the juxtaposition of the two comments on abortion. I think that, along with everything else, helps to show that such a prayer is not a biased, slanted thing, but rather, an acknowledgement of the Truth, and an acceptance of it. conservativecatholic
That prayer was great! Representative Quelland is one of the few who has the courage to stand up for what is right. Unlike the liberals, Quelland is not timid to utilize his first amendment right to free speech. The items of abortion, welfare, and pornography were brought to attention in Rep. Quelland's prayer and I hope that law-makers will finally open up for business and start doing their jobs. Too many legislatures are at a standstill because of liberal pouting. There are conservatives as well who have held their office for 20 years and do nothing but create more of a bureaucracy. This must come to an end! Vote smart this November! Norseman82
That prayer came to public attention when it was used to open a session of the Kansas state legislature a few years ago.
