staying away is thus the best choice. it would be a sin to knowingly allow yourself to get addicted. if you are already addicted, you lack culpability for that sin because of the effect that addiction has on your will. but you should not allow yourself to get addicted in the first place.

I must disagree some.

I don't think once you are addicted to something, you lack all culpability. Masturbation, pronography, alcoholism...all of these things are addictions. Sin occurs every time one of these acts is committed, even if it is under addiction. He may not be a mortal sin everytime because of the addiction, but the person still has a degree of free will, even in addiction. They are still culpable.

I also don't think people just "allow themselves to get addicted". I think it just happens sometimes. Some people have addictive dispositions.

So, again..if cigarettes are harmful and have no benefit but much consequence, how can one say it is not sinful to smoke? We can include cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco if you'd like. (Although I know people who smoke the ocassional pipe or cigar without being addicted.)

I think the vast majority of those who smoke cigarettes are addicted. That is why they come so many in a pack. On the other hand, smoking cigars is very different. That is when smoking tobacco is not a sin, when in moderation, since cigarettes are never used in moderation.
