Sojourner
I think parishes need an honors section of RCIA.
That would've been nice, actually. The guidelines say that folks who are active Christians who have chosen to convert should not necessarily have to do the entire class. Mrs. Bro. Adam, I'd agree with Cmom -- if you're really concerned about it, bring it up to your priest. You do have to realize that most people coming into RCIA don't do the research that you guys (and other converts on this board) did before joining. I think most parishes just aren't prepared for converts who made a well-educated choice, and don't quite know what to do with them.
p0lar_bear
Mrs. Bro. Adam, The RCIA is a process, not a set of classes. While most people identify RCIA with the catechesis, the pastoral and liturgical elements are just as important. Even if the catechesis is not helpful for you, the major and minor rites done throughout the RCIA are a source of grace for continuing conversion. In addition, the relationships you build with the other candidates and catechumens can be very helpful. You have a distinct advantage with phatmass to have people who have gone through the things you are going through or will go through. Most people in the RCIA don't have that, so the community developed there can be very important. Even though you have phatmass, the people here aren't in your community. The relationships you develop through the RCIA can help you feel at home in your parish community. Just some thoughts....
cmotherofpirl
I think the process can be be a good one, but they have to allow that some students are light years ahead of others and adjust accordingly. You can also invite all your fellow classmates here to phatmass
Mrs. Bro. Adam
I understand that it's a process, but the problem that I have with it is that through this process, I'm becoming hindered because I"m not allowed to answer from anything but the material in front of me, and that's not helping me at all. Oh well....I'm going to talk to Father Don and see if I can still reconcile without going through the RCIA process.
Thy Geekdom Come
I think parishes need an honors section of RCIA.
I'll take that a step further. We need multiple levels of catechesis for converts and reverts, but we also need better catechesis all around. Too many Catholics don't think anything of being Catholic. Too few know what the Church teaches and, what's worse, too few care what the Church teaches. We need better religion classes, more in depth, but not necessarily longer, homilies (no more fluff, just get to it), fuller RCIA, and every Catholic should have a copy of the Catechism and the Bible close at hand. IcePrincessKRS
I'm glad I was able to come up Teresa (even if you think RCIA is a pain ) I just wish we'd been able to linger a bit longer after Mass. We picked 33 pounds of blueberries, though. I picked twice as much as Matthew. He ate more than wound up in his basket. Ironically, his 4 year old nephew did the same thing.... they must be related. IcePrincessKRS
33 lbs. of blueberries? Holy cow...
Yes. And two days before that we picked... well, my father in law picked 12 pounds and my sister in law and I picked 23 between the two of us... Matt and I brought home probably between 30 and 40 lbs... They weren't all for us, most are for his sister who lives here in Steubie. But they are gooooood berries.

She was telling me how a question was asked and she gave an answer that went beyond what was written in the text and they asked that she not do that but just stick to the material in front of them. Birgitta Noel
Hey Teresa, I know it's awful to have to sit through it. Offer it up as a sacrafice of Love as St. Therese would have done. Especially when you feel like or :slam: Of course you could always silently pray a rosary during that hour too...tee hee....

IcePrincessKRS
They are using the St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism... I think its book #2, which is supposed to be for the level of level of learning in Confirmation classes (grades 6-8 according to the book description), which works pretty well for the other people in Teresa's RCIA class, but for Teresa its not really very helpful anymore. She's beyond the 8th grade learning level. I understand there are certain hoops that have to be jumped through, but still... they could at least broaden the discussion a bit.
