Abortion film to air, despite worry
By Emma-Kate Symons, Social affairs writer
July 10, 2004
POLITICAL leaders including John Howard and Mark Latham voiced concern yesterday at the ABC's decision to screen an abortion on national television, but there were no moves to ban the controversial documentary.

The British film contains confronting footage of a doctor scraping a woman's uterus and sucking out blood and foetal tissue using a syringe-like instrument.

There are shots of a doctor sorting through foetal tissue, and of the remains of foetuses up to the age of 21 weeks.

My Foetus, produced by pro-choice Briton Julia Black, will screen in an Australian first on the ABC's Compass program on August 8, as revealed in The Australian yesterday.

Black, the daughter of a pro-abortion doctor, reflects on her decision to terminate a pregnancy at age 21.

My Foetus prompted heated political debate about late-term abortions when it was shown on Britain's Channel 4 earlier this year.

The Prime Minister said yesterday he had "some concern" about the ABC's decision to screen the documentary.

"I'm not somebody who believes in too much censorship but some people will find it disturbing and distressing, although others will argue it presents in a very graphic and confronting way what is involved in abortion."

But Mr Howard said abortion would remain a conscience vote in the Liberal Party.

"I personally have a very conservative view but I'm not somebody who runs around the country foisting his views on others," he said.

Mr Latham said he would not be watching My Foetus, because he was not interested.

"The ABC has a charter," he said. "It needs to act in the public interest. It is funded publicly. I would hope in this instance it is following its charter and all the appropriate guidelines."

Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott, who has bemoaned the "national tragedy" of 100,000 abortions a year, agreed the ABC faced a difficult decision.

"It's an ugly business and it probably doesn't hurt for the Australian people to understand just what is going on in clinics all around Australia right now," Mr Abbott said.

Anti-abortion groups wel comed the ABC's move.

"The only reason people object to seeing an abortion on TV is because they don't want to be confronted with the truth about it," said Margaret Tighe of Right to Life.

According to feminist Wendy McCarthy, a founding member of the Women's Electoral Lobby, pregnancy termination is a private matter.

But she agreed scientific developments showing the growth of foetuses meant there could be debate on Australia's 20-week limit on abortions.

Another Great Article!

Btw Tony Abbott is a Catholic MP in the Australia Government, hes a bit of a bogan, but hes strong and determined on this issue.

Well if people saw baby parts maybe they would change their minds about abortion.

I don't need to watch my girlfriend get raped to know it's bad. I don't need to watch someone get stabbed to know it's bad, and I certainly don't need to see an abortion to know it's bad.

I take it that the ABC mentioned in this article isn't the same as the American ABC. I don't think they'd show that on TV here in the States.

I personally wouldn't watch it because I don't think I can handle watching any kind of murder on TV. I do hope though that the pro-'choice' people watch it and view the reality that abortion is.

Thats why many people here in aus who are pro-life are pushing the film to be seen, give those self-righteous feminists some shock.

No. This is an aussie newspaper, so it would refer to the aussies ABC only, unless said otherwise.

Who would actually want to watch this happening is my question. It made me sick just reading the process it stated in the article. :(

I've seen an abortion, it was a small video clip, and it made me sick. No human should have to see it to know the horrors of abortion, but if it'll help some people realize the truth, then I'm all for it.

God bless,

Michael Filo

There was a movie on tv here, with a 'real' abortion, showed the fetus and everything, I felt like buggers after that :sadder:

True. What I think though is that the only people who would watch this are those that are hard core pro choice anyway. You probably will not change any of those minds. Pro lifers won't because it just goes against everything that we believe. Middle of the row probably are not that interested anyway. BUT if the airing of this does change the minds of a few (to pro life of course) then it is worth it. :)
