crusader1234
Hey everyone, I know the majority of us here are Catholics and good ones at that (why else would we be here) but theres something on this Phorum that constantly bothers me... having people refer to liberals as evil. There are two types of liberals, economic types, and moral types. I'm not morally liberal (temptation aside ) I am economically liberal (temptation aside ) Now I know these things usually go hand in hand, but not always. I'm very economically liberal and very morally conservative (unless I'm masochistic I wouldn't be Catholic if I was morally liberal ) and I cringe when I see people say darned liberals because I don't know whether they are attacking me or the baby killing ssa or all that trash that I'm against. So in the future, please try to clarify what you mean by "liberal" because I'm getting tired of having to re-read everything over and over again to figure out the context because people don't usually bother to clarify. Peace, Rich
catholicguy
I recommend to your reading Liberalism is a Sin, or, if you are fluent in Spanish, the original, El Liberalismo es Pecado. This book was written in the mid to late 1800s by a Spanish priest who was writing against Modernism (i.e., Liberalism) as it had already begun at that time! His bishop condemned the book, wrote a sort of rebuttal, and submitted Liberalism is a Sin to the Vatican to be placed on the Index of Forbidden Books. Instead, the Vatican heralded the priest's book and placed the bishop's book on the banned books list. The editor of the book makes it clear that it is not talking about political liberalism so much as it is talking about religious liberalism. You will see Americanism, Liberalism, Modernism (all strands of the same heresy) condemned by the book. It is truly great. You should give it a chance and reconsider the concept of liberalism and why you support 'liberal' concepts at all (as opposed to traditional, historical concepts, e.g., kingship rather than republic, etc). MorphRC
There are different meanings to Liberal, depending on your political, religious, and social perspectives. For instance if I refer to the Liberal Party in Australia, im refering to a medium conservative political party, even though they have liberal in their name ..which is odd. Anyways the majority of the time, people here refer to Liberal is to pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, or anything that undermines the Catholic Church. ironmonk
When I say liberal I refer to both the moralless kind in the USA, and the theological liberals that think they can warp what the Church teaches. We can disagree on how to fix the economy and still both be good Catholics if the plan we want provides for those who cannot provide for themselves and reduces dependancy on the walfare system. What really irks me is when people say that reps are only for big business... every democrat that I have seen run against a rep and economy was involved they lied about the rep wanting to take away things from the poor and doesn't care about the poor, when in reallity the rep has a different way of helping the poor. BeenaBobba
If I were ever to say, "Darn Liberals!" I'd only say it in opposition to Liberals of the gay "marriage"/baby killing/euthanasia/embryonic stem cell usage/cloning/forced vegetarianism/absolute pacifism supporting variety. I'd also use it in opposition to the We Want Women Priests And Garbage Like That(tm) crowd. Rich, your brand of Liberalism doesn't bother me at all, although I might disagree with you at times. But, on the other hand, I often agree with some of what you say. God bless, Jen
