Anyone here read Fulton Sheen's Lift Up Your Heart? For what I know of Purpose Driven Life, it doesn't sound too dissimilar, just Catholic.
Purpose driven life--presents itself as real. Tries to teach faith. Directed towards adults and faith formation groups.

Harry Potter--presents itself as fiction. Tries to entertain. Directed toward young teens and adults for fantasy reading.

hmmm...I think there may be a difference here....

LOTR and Harry Potter are a much better comparison. Both present themselves a fiction literature.

Also, do you actually know any children who would read A Purpose Driven Life?
Yes, the cathecism students at school did it and they have study groups for children based on the book. I helped with the art project for the kids.

It sold more than Harry Potter. It's worth looking into.

I think if we are gonna spend time reading to our kids, it might as well be about Jesus.

Many people don't even have bible time with their kids, but they take the time for Harry Potter. Kids are gonna put the two together and think that the bible is not interesting but fantasy books are better.

I beg to differ. The bible is the most exciting book of adventure and excitement and miracles ever written! Full of the fight against good and evil, angels, demons, parting of the sea, Noah and the ark, etc...etc...etc...

It's not fantasy, but something they can really hold onto throughout their life and remember and associate bible reading with family fun.

Have your children ever read a fairy tale?
I've tried to read them fairy tales, but they aren't interested. I tried to get them to watch Wizard of Oz and they told me it was bad and scary.

They like books about real life friends and cars and trucks and learning about science and wildlife and stuff. Stories about friends, etc...

They chose that, not me.
Tolkien was a Catholic ,writing the classic catholic myth.
Dang, you beat me to it. Yeah. If I had a kid, I'd give him or her The Hobbit or the LotR series myself. Granted, if I had a kid I would always "brainwash" the poor child with things like... um... going to mass every Sunday, daily prayer, and etc. <sarcasm> The horror... the horror. </sarcasm>

Maybe we need to start a thread for studying that book.

What do you all think of a catholic book study.

That would be neat to have that on this site, a book of the month or something.

And people could post their favorite quotes.
Claudine,

My church (catholic) recommended the book and went through it with the cathecism kids and the adult study groups for lent, and my religious director asked me to to an art project to go with the book, so I came up with a scripture tag art project. My pastor and all of our church clergy say it's wonderful.

I flipped throught the book initially to design the project, BUT I'm re-reading it slow and I'm on chapter 16.

I'm surprised that many catholics on this board on another thread say it's heretical and we should not be reading it, but Harry Potter which has spell chants in it, and a school for witches and wizards is not heretical reading ???

If our church teaches witchcraft is a sin, we shouldn't read any books that glorify spells, right? It's like giving your child a book about extra-marital sex and saying "Well this is just fictional so you can read it and find some christian lessons in it".

I have THREE catholics in my family dabbling in wicca now and two have completely left the faith and now deny christs divinity and embrace witchcraft. They have pointed out to me that the Catholic church says wicca is okay. I hope the third person in my family keeps his faith.

Maybe they need to read The Purpose Driven Life.
