The moral compass of the United States has been lost

The ongoing war in Ukraine is a humanitarian and moral catastrophe. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost, millions displaced, and nearly $200 billion of American taxpayer dollars spent. While the suffering in Ukraine is undeniable, this war represents a failure of global leadership and a gross misallocation of resources. At a time when the United States faces crumbling infrastructure, economic instability, and deep societal divisions, funding this war underscores the moral bankruptcy of our political system.

From a Catholic perspective, the Church’s social doctrine is clear: war should always be the last resort and must adhere to principles of justice, proportionality, and the common good. Pope Francis has consistently called for an end to global conflicts, emphasizing the need for diplomacy and peacebuilding over violence and destruction. Yet, the war in Ukraine continues, fueled by international power struggles, economic interests, and political corruption.

The moral reprehensibility of this war is compounded by the neglect of urgent needs at home. Roads and bridges crumble, healthcare and education systems falter, and the fabric of American society grows weaker. Instead of addressing these pressing issues, our leaders prioritize funding a distant war, leaving American citizens to shoulder the burden of misguided priorities.

This is not just a political failure; it is a spiritual one. The moral compass of the United States has been lost, replaced by greed, self-interest, and power. As Catholics, we must confront this reality and call for a return to Christ-centered values. Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, calls us to reject violence and seek the common good, yet our leaders perpetuate war and division.

To rebuild our nation and renew our moral foundation, we must turn back to God. A society disconnected from its Creator cannot hope to achieve true justice or peace. Prayer, repentance, and a recommitment to the teachings of Christ are essential to healing the moral corruption that pervades our political system. Only by placing God at the center of our decisions can we hope to end senseless wars, rebuild our communities, and guide our nation toward a future rooted in peace and righteousness.
