“This stigmata was a manifestation of a mystical relationship between the human person and God. This relationship of love was made real by the marks left on St. Francis. It came at a time when he had given up the leadership of his community and was suffering from ill health. He was not abandoned by God and he did not abandon God in his infirmity or loss. His continued trust and love was acknowledged by God. “
