I Love The Mass, But....

Recommended Posts

I love Mass, but it seems like every time I go, I can't get into it. I've tried reading and researching the readings, to help me, and to listen intently to the homily, but.....I don't know. It's like, I can't wait to go to Mass, but once I'm there, I wish I were somewhere else.

I don't know if it's because I'm having a crisis of faith, or if it's because I know of all the abuses that are going on (and all the churches in my city having varying degrees of abuses....from bad to worse).

Most of the time when I go, I feel like Jesus isn't even there!

There is no truly orthodox (to the Magisterium) church in my city. Heck, I doubt if there's a good church in my diocese!

Has anyone else had this? Or does anyone have any suggestions?

we just had a lifenight on the mass and how to get into it more......i think most of the stuff we talked about you already know but i can relate to how you are feeling and it is tough......but the act of going to mass is purifying and if right now you arent feeling like you get anything out of it, realize that its the devil trying to get you to stop going! stay strong and keep praying!!!

thanks, i'm still going to mass, don't get me wrong, and i know that mass isn't about "touchy-feely" stuff, but at the same time, i should be getting something out of it, right? i study the readings, but it seems like nothing is touching my heart. i don't feel moved by it at all! even when i haven't been "into" the mass before (when I was a teenager), i still felt moved by the Eucharist!!

i should mention that i also work for the same parish i am a member of. i doubt highly my priest (and boss) would be pleased if i said, "Excuse me, Father, but because of your unwillingness to conform to what the Church teaches, I feel that I'm not getting as much out of Mass as I should. What should I do?"

i'm not saying this to be sarcastic, either, lankyswimmer. please don't take it as such. :) my parish priest and i aren't always on good terms. we fought about getting a certain cable system in my building for youth because it carries EWTN.

i just wish i could move to somewhere that was faithful to the Church. :(

well dont approach it as "your abuses are causing me to have trouble getting something out of mass" try it more like "father do you know how i may become more deeply attuned to the mass" or something to that effect so that its you wanting to grow in your faith, and not like call him out on the abuses to his face....make sense?

HHmmmmm this is hard i know, i had a similar problem, not getting into mass. I went to confession and i asked the priest what should i do and he told me for the mass don't speak, and don't open your eyes!

So i tried it not having my eyes open and not speaking, i mean i did open my eyes to recieve Jesus but you know what i mean, and let me tell you, that was so awesome. I must warn you though, if you decide to do this don't do it when your tired, lol. But i realized i had my senses doing all the talking and not my spirtual senses.

So i hope this helps.

God Bless

Lil Red,

I would suggest picking up a good copy of Dark Night of the Soul or Prayer: Insights from St.Therese of Lisieux. Both are really good books and talk about the Mass and/or spiritual silence.

In Story of a Soul, St. Thérèse talks about how thanksgiving after Mass is where she feels spiritually the most empty, the time she doesn't feel like she gets anything out of, but then she goes on to say that's okay because that's a time for her to give herself to God. :)

I would suggest just giving yourself over to God, and even if you feel nothing, don't worry. :) It's actually natural!
