theculturewarrior
I tend to agree with Aloysius, although perhaps I would have put it milder. Any style of music can have sacred songs, but is it a sacred style of music? I think for mass one should only use sacred styles of music, if that makes any sense. However, this is just my personal preference, and I am often disappointed. I would hate to see a bluegrass mass, or a New Orleans Jazz mass. These have the possibility of being sacred, but they are secular styles unassociated in the minds of the average joe with the Holy. On the other hand, many countries have folk music that is often directed to God, like in West Africa or Latin America. I've been to a Mexican pholk mass and it was lovely. The songs were humble and simple and quite Christocentric.
ironman
I love hip hop and all forms of music, there is a time and place for that music to be played. In Mass, we should stick to the basics......such as chant, guitar, piano,..and some other instruments. I've already witnessed many times, the music offset or overriding the Mass. Sometimes, we need to just smell of elderberries up our pride and save our creativity for after the Mass.
ProfessorJT
I went to "stacks" the other day, a record store and said, "do u happen to have any christian or catholic hip-hop, anything secular or something like that" and the guy looked at me all confused and asked the manager, "do we sell any sacred hip-hop?" So if a record store clerk thought it was sacred im pretty sure it can be sacred.
Soldier4Him
should we be bouncing around (even though we're not meaning to), while in Mass?
ilc~you went to steubenville right? i'm sure you saw people "bouncing around" during songs in mass. God loves it when we lift our hands to him in song and clap and shout to Him. It's in the psalms! It's a form of prayer. Granted I do agree that if the music takes the focus off the purpose of the mass, it shouldn't be used. MorphRC
It is sacred, just a matter of keeping it sacred.
M.SIGGA
hey Flip, "Anima Christi" on your free downloads was tight. I've been to some Afro-American Catholic parishes in New Orleans that would prob use something like this, done like this with their music ministry and choirs. Keep it up.
