it can be sacred in its own way, however, it is not sacred in the sense of how music for the mass must be sacred. it can lead people to Christ, but it's proper place is not within the Holy Mass.

Great question flip.

I asked my kids mom this same question. She does not like rap/hip hop at all. But I do and listening to you and the rest on here keeps me away from the eminems of the world.

What I like to do is drive around town, windows down, cranking my Catholic Hip Hop in the hopes that people listen to some of the words and it might get them thinking. You wouldnt believe some of the looks I get when they hear lyrics in true Catholic form coming over my speakers. I think to myself 'Roman Catholic...thats right!'

But I asked my kids mom, when you hear something like this (hip hop/rap) can you hear the lyrics at all, or just hear that its rap and then automatically tune out?

She had said that for her, as soon as she hears its rap/hip hop she tunes out because its not her style.

This is why I chose option 2 above. I think only those that are open minded enough to listen to even a little hip hop (from the radio) might come on board. But definitly those that all ready like Hip Hop would deem this as Sacred.

I cant tell you how many times that PhatMass CD has brought me back from some dark times.

God Bless

i believe it can be sacred, but i also believe it doesnt belong in mass. I love the silent and calm mass. Although i can hardly find any here. I just think that it would turn the mass into something that it's not. a "Show".

Yeah... there are times and places for it... and yes Father Stan has done an excellent job at doing it - I saw him for the first time this weekend... he was great.

The way I see it is that yes Hip hop can be sacred but the whole hip hop genre couldn't be... perhaps I'm wrong but the whole image isnt sacred and there are only a few artists out there - most unknown to the majority of listeners who promote a sacred image.

perhaps I'm not making sense, I dunno... just a brief thought.

"elements from the traditions and cultures of individual peoples"(Sacred Liturgy, 37, 40). The use of vernacular languages and cultural symbols and adapted rituals within the Church's liturgy is a sign of Catholic unity and serves to bring all peoples and cultures into the worship of God, who rejoices in the beauty of everything he has made.
i started last night wokring on some new music. its hip hop...with gregorian chant. hows that for sacred?
that is the kind of stuff that i'd like to see...

but i'm not sure if you're describing what i like...

i want gregorian chant--with a beat behind it. that's it. a dope beat, and you've got it made

i think that hiphop can be sacred.. but its different when it comes to Mass. think of it this way--

if there's a hiphop song being played for the entrance.. our body language will most likely respond. should we be bouncing around (even though we're not meaning to), while in Mass?
