Omicron targeting children

Reports have been coming out of Africa about this phenomenon for the last month...

Increased severity in kids, more hospitalisations: Preliminary report on Omicron from South Africa

That seems to be manifesting now in the US and elsewhere as Omicron spreads.

Yes I’m sure the timing of this variant isn’t a coincidence as they’ve just approved jabbing children.

I mean it’s not like spreading fear  is the media could be making money for anyone, right?

I’m sure the WHO will do it’s best to accurately report any child deaths as well.

From Dr. Bassett, NY State Acting Health Commissioner, referenced in the article Mercedes shared, and speaking in the NY Governor's press conference (around 34:40, link:

"We are a long way from the type of tsunami that was experienced and we have no indication from the experience internationally that we're going there. This is a highly contagious virus but it's clear at this point that it doesn't cause severe illness. The risk to our hospital system is simply the numbers . . .

"The numbers that we gave on pediatric admissions weren't intended to make it seem like we were having an epidemic of infection. These were small numbers that we reported in our health alert. That was based on 50 hospitalizations and I've now given you some larger numbers but they're still small numbers. It really is to motivate pediatricians and families to seek the protection of vaccination."

Thankfully, even as the number of people who are in hospital and testing positive for COVID goes way up, in New York State, the number of total hospitalizations for any reason is either unchanged or getting lower.

As far as I understand it, there is no difference in New York State reporting (or most other states) for a COVID hospitalization between those admitted because of COVID symptoms and those who are in hospital for something else who are routinely tested and come out positive. Both are part of numbers. My guess is that the pediatric hospitalization numbers are no different.

As Mercedes' first article linked says, there is

Quote

a sharp rise in hospital admissions in Covid-positive kids above the age of two in South Africa.

Which is precisely the language you would use when you only mean "positive COVID tests for people admitted to hospital" which is then linguistically conflated in the headline with "COVID hospitalization".

In an NBC News article on this - https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/child-covid-hospitalizations-are-5-states-are-rise-rcna10089 - halfway through,  they quote a vaccine education director at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

However, he said, his hospital has seen a lot of kids test positive for Covid without necessarily showing symptoms or getting sick.

"We test anybody who’s admitted to the hospital for whatever reason to see whether or not they have Covid, and we’re definitely seeing an increase in cases. However, we’re really not seeing an increase in children who are hospitalized for Covid or in the intensive care unit for Covid," Offit said.

"Increase in cases", then, means "increase in people testing positive, with or without symptoms" (in this case, a lot of the time without).

Just as in New York State, in the entire USA the amount of people in hospital testing positive for COVID has gone up as total hospital beds used has gone down.

Dr. John Campbell seems to do the most intellectually honest job of analyzing the information that is coming out of Africa......

he is in another league altogether from anybody at CNN who is really an actor playing the role of an objective analyst but.... they are really a sales person for BigPharma and they engage in fear mongering.

Science indicates less severe omicron disease

Wikipedia reports that Dr Campbell, who is not a physician but a nurse educator, has been caught spreading covid misinformation.

On the other hand the American Academy of Pediatrics reports this updated today...

COVID-19 cases among US children have reached the highest case count ever reported since the start of the pandemic. For the week ending December 30th, over 325,000 child COVID-19 cases were reported. This number is a 64% increase over the 199,000 added cases reported the week ending December 23rd and an almost doubling of case counts from the two weeks prior.

And this today from Dr Mark Kline the physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital New Orleans...

The spike in hospitalizations frustrates pediatric infectious disease doctors on the front lines treating children sick with the coronavirus.

"It seems like people have tried to downplay the significance of the disease in children," said Dr. Mark Kline, the physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital New Orleans. "We've spent two years rebutting myths pertaining to Covid and children, that it's 'harmless' for children. It's not."

As of Monday, Kline said, 14 children were sick enough with Covid-19 to be hospitalized at his facility, and three were in the intensive care unit.

The three children are under age 2. The youngest is just 8 weeks old.

At Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, pediatric hospitalization numbers, at close to 70 patients, have surpassed the peak of patients during the surge of the delta variant in the summer, Dr. Jim Versalovic, a pathologist who is a co-leader of the Covid-19 Command Center, said at a news briefing Monday. More than 90 percent of the cases are due to the omicron variant.

"More children infected with omicron still translates into a big number of children who may need hospital-based care," Versalovic said.

On Monday, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported a sharp rise in pediatric Covid-19 cases. At least 325,340 cases were reported during the week of Dec. 23, compared with 198,551 cases during the week of Dec. 16. While serious illness from Covid is still rare for younger children, the sheer number of new cases worries doctors.

As of Sunday, the number of pediatric Covid admissions had hit a new peak: 1,354 a day, based on a seven-day average, according to NBC News data.

And the number of kids who simply occupied hospital beds each day, even if they ultimately weren't admitted to the hospital, reached a record average of 3,081 a day over the last seven-day period.

Kline co-authored a study, published last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that analyzed 915 Covid cases among children and teenagers hospitalized at six medical centers in July and August.

More than three-quarters — 78 percent — were hospitalized because of complications of Covid-19. About half needed help breathing, and nearly a third were placed in intensive care.

A third of the 915 patients were otherwise healthy, without any underlying health problems that would have put them at greater risk.

“I think a lot of parents have been relying on the narrative that if you have a healthy child, it’s very unlikely that your child can get sick from Covid. That’s not true,” said Dr. Amy Edwards, a pediatric infectious disease expert at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.

Dr John Campbell is pro-vax, was one of the first people warning of the coming pandemic, warning people to wear masks, stay six foot apart, wash your hands religiously, all the good pro-vax stuff. And just like that boom he's fake news.

Aside from the study, which is helpful since it distinguishes between hospitalized for COVID symptoms and those who merely test positive while in hospital for something else, the most recent data simply does not make that distinction. They simply neglect to mention it in some articles, but say it in others.

That's a massive distinction. To neglect to make that distinction is a kind of lie.

It also remains - still - that more kids get sick and die from the seasonal flu than COVID. I fully expect the same breadth and amount of reportage on that from the state health departments and the news when the flu returns.

This is not to minimize or count as nothing the fact that yes, kids do get sick and some get seriously sick from COVID. That's a tragedy.

And again - perhaps slightly wider than the topic of COVID in children - but here is the ICU bed usage in the state of Illinois.

That's a graph which results from testing everyone in hospital and simply taking whoever is on the blue line and transferring them to the red line if they test positive.

Obviously there is not complete overlap. Many people are obviously in hospital for COVID symptoms. But the proportion of that which reflects actual COVID hospitalizations is less than the baseline numbers of "hospitalizations" and "ICUs".

From the health services director of Los Angeles, Christina Ghaly:

Quote

Health officials have noted throughout the pandemic that many of the COVID-positive patients at hospitals were admitted for reasons other than the virus, and only learned they were infected when they were tested upon arrival. Dr. Christina Ghaly, the county's health services director, told the Los Angeles Times that about two-thirds of the COVID-positive patients at the four county-operated hospitals were admitted for something other than COVID.

They’re going to label anyone, regardless of expertise *cough* Dr. Robert Malone *cough cough*, as being spreaders of misinformation.

If you’re not pushing the covid fear and vaccine savior narrative like, Mercedes, then you’re the enemy.

Misinformation is the new 'fake news.' A phrase Trump co-opted and used to dismiss criticism without at all addressing it.

It really does seem no criticism, no questioning, no doubts, at all is allowed. Which isn't scientific but dogmatic absolutism.

I think reality is always more complex than it seems, on both "sides".

The question is - assuming you hold certain principles dear, do you retain an open mind?

I try to.

When the CDC did an about-face on its pre-2020 pandemic guidelines (did not recommend mass asymptomatic testing and mass lockdown, did not recommend universal masking), I was told it was because "the science changed". I'm sure everyone went with this because they had an open mind to science changing so fast.

I have an open mind towards the pre-2020 CDC guidelines being largely true. Supporting pre-2020 science will get you banned from twitter and ostracized from social circles, though.

At the same time, yes, we have lots of data on COVID now and I'm keeping an open mind towards whatever interventions and solutions work, from the usual vax and test to different treatment options. It's just, they've got to be properly demonstrated to work.
