Brother Adam
Do you ever miss Praise and Worship in your old Protestant Church. I'm sitting here humming to "Thank you for the Cross" and "Awesome God" and can't help but to miss being in a community of worship with these uplifting songs. Maybe all local Catholic dioceses should have P&W nights during the week.
MParedon
I think that is a great idea.
Sojourner
I never liked P&W to begin with, so I don't miss it. That said, I know there are parishes that do it, so I'm sure you could find one.
theculturewarrior
Is that a charismatic thing? I heard somewhere that there's more charismatics in the Catholic Church than in anywhere else, so I'm sure you could find some P&W. I would imagine Steubenville has something like that. Wouldn't hurt to ask! At the local Newman Center (I'm not endorsing Newman Centers or anything, just an example) they had a prayer group called Vi Ember Christi, where students would pray and sing. (It was a little new agee though. ) But I'd imagine that there is something better in Steubie! God bless...
Sojourner
P&W isn't necessarily a charismatic thing ... almost every Protestant church I've attended does it. Generally, it consists of a praise team (i.e., a band and singers) leading the congregation in a series of choruses. Not to knock Brother Adam, but I generally found P&W to be emotionally manipulative and lacking in substance. I know some people really like it, and perhaps if I'd grown up in a church that sang these I'd feel differently, but I didn't.
homeschoolmom
Yes, I miss it sometimes. Some songs more than others... some songs are kinda but many, many aren't... and I miss them... singing them in the car with the kids just isn't the same. However, I oftentimes catch myself singing the Gloria and the Lamb of God and all the other song around the house... I like that too... but I get what you're saying, Adam. The P/W experience with a group can be really... meaningful...
Brother Adam
Right- what HS_mom said. It's not about being charasmatic at all. Charasmatics scare me. :shudder: I mean, just really singing your heart out to God. You really just can't capture that in mass, it's much more reverant and quiet. Sometimes you just want to clap and sing (and heaven forbid a former Baptist saying this) and dance to the Lord. I don't think it's totally emotionally hollow. Look at the Old Testament. People used instruments and danced and lifted their hearts to God.
Neal4Christ
There is a local Catholic Church that has a P & W band during it's Saturday Mass. The priest said it was geared more towards the younger generation. In Christ, Neal

Adam, I'm not so scary, am I? (Funny enough, I defend charismatics now, even though I thought of myself as more "evangelical" than "pentecostal", and I'm not looking for a charismatic Catholic church. I guess it's because I had some genuine God-given experiences in the charismatic movment. I totally understand it looking scary from the outside, though. And you were Baptist, right? Not too much love lost between Baptists and Pentecostals. I remember the first time I realized that charismatics were considered "weird" by some other Christians. It was at my "non-denominational" Christian college. I was talking to a girl about home churches, and when I mentioned I was Assemblies of God, she looked horrified and ended the conversation immediately. I was shocked, really. I didn't know I was considered beyond the pale. Wonder what she would think about my becoming Catholic! ) In any case, I hear what you're saying. I didn't listen to P&W outside of church, but there are quite a few songs I really like, that I will miss singing on a regular basis. I imagine that if I'd visited the church you grew up in, I'd find it unimaginably dry and stifling. Different strokes for different folks. homeschoolmom
Some of our college buddies (yep the Charlie Brown dancing ones) and we get together every summer... and we go camping... we sing P/W around the campfire... no cheesy songs allowed-- we're very picky! It's great. I love it. It's my favorite part of the weekend...
homeschoolmom
I like mass the way it is... quiet, reverent etc. so I wouldn't want to change that in any way... but I do miss the P/W aspect... hmmm...
Crusader_4
I dont mind P&W but its not really per say my thing. Althought sometimes still i will be walking around and burst into "Our God is an awesome God..." however more and more often i find myself singing a Gloria or a Lamb of God altho i always get weary of siginign lamb of God if the Lamb Of God is not there in front of me....altho the Gloria is beautiful....i could sing that one all day as well as "Here I am Lord" and other hymns that i have ingrained into my hymn i have found i dont miss P&W as long as i have some nic hymns i sing along to myself with my whole heart througought the day i find that works a lot and it makes the day better. It was one of the (many) reason I left and found St. Matthew's. My dislike of P&W comes from the fact that the people at the old church seemed to be singing their own praises rather than praising God. (This just might be my old church's case )
homeschoolmom
And I agree... I was getting really, really frustrated with "performance worship" if you know what I mean. I still think there is a place for P/W, but not sure if Sunday morning worship is it...
