Cardinal Burke on Ventilator with Covid

Report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the daily newspaper where Burke was archbishop. Progress seems to be good, but one never knows, do one? He was never my favorite prelate, but a prelate he is, so we ought to pray for him.

Aww come on, Burke's fans understand the small hope that people's health will impact their ability to spread messages.

Really, this is in outrageously poor taste. Have a bit of compassion and stop trying to take advantage of every possible situation to tell us how oh-so-morally superior you are.

My sin here is not lack of compassion, it is having compassion for the wrong people. 

Cartinal Burke has shepherded his flock down a dangerous path.  His flock has unnecessarily had many cases of COVID that are every bit as harrowing and traumatic as Burke's own.  For the suffering of the flock under the stewardship of a poor shepherd, my heart goes out.

For the poor shepherd, the best I can do is to hope he survives to steer his flock back to the right path. 

 

I am reminded of a "News from Lake Wobegon" segment about a bad bus driver who drinks while he drives, takes the kids lunch money, and shares his magazines.  Once he is reported, he is given a 1 week notice.  On the last day he drives his bus out onto a frozen lake and abandons the kids.

Once the incident is resolved, Keillor remarks "and you know, not much was said about it.  This was back in the days when a lot was not said about a great deal.  Things happened in my childhood that nowadays there would be an investigation and a task force and the whole system would be turned around counterclockwise because of this one thing that had happened... the whole thing would have been changed, but back then nothing was said about it; it was just a part of life."

In many ways the church is an organization stuck in the mindset Keillor describes.  Pointing out problems or hoping for change is distasteful rocking of the boat.  If our flocks occasionally get left out on a frozen lake by themselves, well that's preferable to facing the reality that our way of doing things needs to change.

You are just being a jerk. Are all atheists this annoying or just you?

Look, if you disagree with what Burke and others have said about the virus that is fine, and you are free to object to it. Many of those objections I and others may also share.

But when a man gets ill, it's not a time to gloat. All of this "concern" that you are now expressing is a bunch of BS. Nobody here buys that. You are just faking it because you got called out. You are acting like a snake and everybody here knows it.

I can think of no better time to re-evaluate that man's advice on how to avoid getting ill.

As I said in that post: people don't like their boat to be rocked.  They will call the person rocking the boat a jerk.  But I personally believe the alternative (not rocking the boat out of fear of being called a jerk) is far worse.  That leads to situations like the covering up of sex abuse in the clergy.

Who am I virtue signalling to?  The large atheist contingent on this board?

If anyone is virtue signalling, it is the people acting outraged over fair criticisms of church leadership and competing over who can be the toughest on atheism.

Dude, most of us on this board, myself included, do not agree with Cardinal Burke’s stances on the vaccine and on covid. That has nothing to do with his role as bishop. And what he said on this subject (which changes nothing about our faith) does not give you the right to come on here and act like a cold, cruel jerk when somebody is earnestly asking for prayers for one of our Church leaders. 
 

I mean, do you want him to die? Because that’s the vibe I’m getting from your posts.
