Lenton Retreat Based On Baptist Book

Afraid to post this if there are any 'spies' from Houston, BUT...

Is it appropriate to do retreats based on fundamentalist baptist books at a catholic lenton retreat.

why would there be 'spies' here?

if there is anything being done that is wrong, know that is not your fault but theirs.

you have every right to ask and seek answers.

and with answers, we can correct and be faithful. :)

Ladybug,
How big is Houston? he,he.
Dont worry.
No one here is a spy.
The chance that someone, out of the entire country, would be posting here and see your name 'ladybug' and that you have 3 kids and live in Houston and say..."Gee, isnt that shirley from around the corner who goes to our lady of fatima?", would be sooooooo slim.

Unless your name IS shirley
and your parish name IS our lady of fatima

In that case....sorry.
Time to turn my CIA card in!!

Peace

I'm from Houston! Attending a Lenten Retreat Based on a Baptist Book... hmmm... sounds interesting. The Catholic Church should never base itself on anything but God, for the Catholic Church is "the" Mother Church. By the way, there are plenty of awesome Lenten Retreats based on Catholic doctrine. Why must your parish paricipate in a protestantized version of a Lenten Retreat? May God Bless!

I can beleive with 2000 years of Saints and writings they have to use a protest-ant book :cyclops:

Sounds a bit silly to me.

That book teaches error and heresy (as the protestant religions, which includes the baptist religion, are heresies). It simply does not even make sense (even if it does not teach specific heresy, which surely it does) to use a non-Catholic book, as has been noted as far as writings of the Saints and other Church documents.

Why use a heretical piece of literature for a Lenten Retreat when the Catholic Church has been blessed with thousands of Church Scholars and Saints throughout the ages?? Makes no sense whatsoever.

I definately agree. Everything you could ever need can be found in the Church, from the most elaborate mystics to the most logical theologians. Whether you are looking for a book that is quick and entertaining (and informative) or deep and thought provoking, you don't need to leave the Church to find it!

I can't really find anything 'heretical' in it. It's pretty basic Christianity. They just don't go into the sacraments and stuff. It's a 40 day book about finding the purpose of your life according to God's plan. All of the church's in our area are doing it together. There are some quotes of Catholic saints in it, and also quotes of protestants. But altogether it's a pretty good book. The only problem I see is it's black or white, heaven or hell, and no discussion of purgatory.

Omissions can constitute as heresy. If the book omits a necessary part of doctrine, it is erroneous and heretical (in regard to Purgatory, works and faith, Sacraments, etc).

Yes, but I'm sure they are explaining that to the study groups.

I read christian poems and short stories and sometimes they are written by a protestant, and I still come away with a nice lesson. Every story, poem, book etc... does not have to go into the doctrine of the catholic church. Otherwise, everything would be a heresy and I could not even watch shows like "Touched by an Angel". And who would ban Touched by an Angel?

I change my mind....I think the book is fine, and we know our sacraments and teaching and so it's not like they are using it to teach OUR church doctrine. It's just a reading into finding God's will for your life. My pastor is very much into reading, and doesn't limit it to just catholic stuff. He previews the books for us.
