ladybug
Just remember altar gathers and deciding to add hand motions are not part of Catholic Mass. They are added by people who are not obedient to the Catholic church. When we enter a Catholic Church, for a Catholic Mass, we are entering another world, a holy world. During the sacrifice of the Mass, we are back at the foot of the cross as Jesus dies for us. We are surrounded by the angels and saints. This is the most important event in our entire life. Its up to the Church to decide what music can lift our hearts and minds and bodies and souls to God. It shouldn't be music we hear on the streets, we are not in the streets but standing on the fringes of eternity.
You know what. I'm not convinced one way or another on this and I'm open to whatever the church decides to do. BUT I have noticed that when I listen to the old traditional music, that my muscles relax, and I think clearer, and I feel peaceful. I feel like I'm on a cloud. With the folk music and the guitars, I feel very scattered and have a hard time settling down into the mass and finding that holy feeling I had when I was a child. So, maybe there is something beyond what we are seeing on the surface about the music. I have read where scientists did studies on plants and babies, and they did not grow as well with heavy music like rock, but classical and relaxing music caused healing and growth. So, from a heavenly point of view as far as it our traditional music could have been given for healing purposes....I can believe that. Here is an article where this lady gathered some information on it. She seems to be a fundamentalist. http://www.av1611.org/neutral.html But some of the info there is interesting. But you have to sift through it. This article seems to be a more relaxing read, a little more on the scientific and eastern buddhist type perspectives...seems like it's written with a little less anger behind it. http://www.vanillafudge.com/link_backups/music2.htm I'm posting these different link just to be objective and to show that both sides gathered research into this subject...I'm still in the middle on this. So, I'm open to whatever God has to say rather than what WE have to say, and I have not made a decision on my own on this yet, but I've decided to stay OPEN to whatever our church decides. Guest JeffCR07
I would like to add just a few thoughts of my own, if thats alright. I love rock music, I play bass and I really appreciate anything from a solid rock bassline, to an arpeggio'd line, to a funky slap line. In all seriousness, playing bass is one of the most important things in my life, and rock music is absolutely crucial to me. The same can be true for other people with other kinds of music, like Flip and hiphop. If droppin beats and throwing down some rhymes is what he is passionate about, then Flip, you should do it with your whole heart, soul, and mind, and all for the glory of God. I want everyone to know that I authoritatively, absolutely disagree with catholic crusader's comments on page 1. I have already posted extensively in my proof that rap/hiphop/etc are NOT intrinsically immoral in the Rap thread on the debate board. He (catholiccrusader), along with those who agree with him (amarkich, popesaintpiusX, popesaintpiusV, catholicguy, et. all) have still yet to post a coherent reply and some of them (catholic crusader being one, I believe) have even stated their inability to provide a refutation. For more on that point, please go to that thread. But should I add funky slap bass to the Mass, or should Flip drop beats before the altar? I think no. I do not say this because there is anything "wrong" with those things (rock and hiphop), but rather, because they are GOOD, and all good things have their place. I just think their place is outside of the chapel. Let me use a comparison to illustrate my point. A man and a woman are married in the Church, and are completely in love with one another, spurred on by this love to create a deeper relationship with Christ. Every single time that married couple has sex, they consumate their marriage again, and this is a thing that is absolutely and totally GOOD in the eyes of God. I don't think anyone could seriously say that those two could walk into an empty chapel and have sex before the Blessed Sacrament. Sex, within the confines of Marriage, is a wonderfully good thing, but it does not have a place in a church, let alone during mass. This is an extreme analogy, but with it I am trying to make a point. Just because something is "good" (and rock and hiphop can both be good) does not mean that it should play an active roll in the sacrifice of the Mass. Hey Flip, just for a more down to earth image, then I'm done, this is how I think it "should" be: I'm kneeling at mass, quietly praying while unobtrusive hymns are sung in the background. I reverently receive the Eucharist, pray my prayer of thanksgiving, the priest ends mass, processes out, and I quietly get up and leave. As I'm walking out the door, I get handed my bass and go to praise God as best as I know how, knowing that my soul has found its rest in the Mass, for "He has lead me before quiet waters, He has restored my soul." Mass isn't about "pumping us up" its about letting us unplug. Its about letting go of all of our worries, troubles and passions and placing them on the cross and receiving Christ's sacrifice, that we, upon leaving Mass, might me able to bear what must be borne. Just my thoughts, - Your Brother In Christ, Jeff

Just my thoughts, - Your Brother In Christ, Jeff
That is a very good analogy. It's not extreme at all. I understand what you are saying. Personally I prefer soft meditative music at Mass. I hear rock n roll and pop and rap all week long, and there is so much noise in the world. I want to rest my ears and my body at mass. Still, light swaying to the music is okay with me. Most churches with the pews are not appropriate for dance, and I like the pews, and like to kneel down and pray, etc.....
