St. Catherine
Just wondering what everyone else does during the Our Father. At our parish we do not hold hands (at least most of us don't.) I personally like it this way.
GirlInTheWhiteArmor
It's common practice in our parish to hold hands, but my family doesn't. My dad says that we're not supposed to. I'll have to ask him why and post again, because I'm not quite sure why he says that. But I agree with you - I like it better that way.

Piccoli Fiori JMJ
+JMJ+ My parish does it all the time... it's actually called the "orans posture" or something like that. Our youth Group always holds hands when praying, even if it isn't an "Our Father", but during Mass it has become a norm for us. It really depends on the parish. I love when I'm not holding anyone's hands and I just have my arms out, my hands tingle, and it still feels like someone is still holding my hand. I haven't seen anything anywhere saying that this is a bad practice, but it does create a sence of community, but it works best when EVERYBODY holds hands, not just the families and friends. Holding hands can be uncomfortable for some w/ the whole personal space issues... but I don't see anything wrong with either way of praying, it's all good! God Bless and Mary Protect... Paladin D
The parish I now go to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church (long name) always holds hands in Mass during the Our Father. I have no problem with it at all, as long as it isn't a liturgical abuse. EDIT: DOH! I voted yes by mistake, thought the poll said Does your church hold hands?. I would vote sometimes myself, it depends on the parish.
Mrs. Bro. Adam
We're not supposed to hold hands during the Our Father because it takes away from the intimacy of the Eucharist, and the Greeting of Peace. We have been asked not to do it. Both my husband and I either put our hands folded in front of us, or behind our backs, and we do not hold hands during the Our Father, ever. I may have offened someone during mass a while ago, cause they wanted to hold hands, but I just gripped my hands firmer in front or me.
+GOD_iS_mOvInG+
I think holding hands durring the Our Father represents our unity in Christ, and that we are all one body... it makes me feel closer to the parish. To me, it doesnt take anything away from the Eucerist at all...but I can see why someone would see it differently. My church(St Ann Parish in Coppel, Texas)holds hands. At the Life Teen Mass, the teens all gather around the altar, and Lock arms while the Eucerist is being concerated, and we all kneel together, and we sing the Our Father and hold hands. It makes us feel closer.
p0lar_bear
My parish does it all the time... it's actually called the "orans posture" or something like that.
The "orans" posture and holding hands are not the same thing.
The Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy expressed a strong preference for the orans gesture over the holding of hands since the focus of the Lord’s Prayer is a prayer to the Father and not primarily an expression of community and fellowship
The "orans" posture is a "hands open to God" position. While the gesture itself is not expressly prohibited for individuals, the priest may not lead the assembly to this gesture. The Church describes holding hands during the Lord’s Prayer as “a liturgical gesture introduced spontaneously but on personal initiative; it is not in the rubrics” (Notitiae, vol. 11 (1975), p.226; reprinted in Documents on the Liturgy (DOL) 1502, n. R29).
St. Catherine
I agree with you Mrs. Bro Adam. Here is a article by Karl Keating that I thought was interesting on the matter. +GOD_iS_mOvInG+
that makes sence...I do the Orans gesture whenever I have no one to hold hands with..it helps me focus on praying to GOD alot easier.. so I can see why the Bishops feel this way

There was a Vatican document that said that the holding of hands should be stopped because it creates a false sense of unity.
