Michael O’Brien

Hi, everybody. I’m new around here but I’ve lurked on Vocation Station for a really long time. I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with the Catholic novelist Michael D. O’Brien. He’s a Canadian Catholic who writes mostly eschatological fiction. I’ve never read any of his work before now, and I’m about five hundred pages into the thousand-page book The Father’s Tale. I’m not quite sure what I think of it.  A lot of Catholics I know absolutely rave about this guy. For me at this point I find this book leans a little too much on a few tired stereotypes and the prose can sometimes be a bit clumsy. It doesn’t quite seem like a great work of literature so far, or that it really needed to be a thousand pages. (Wow, what deep and thoughtful literary criticism, SicutColumba!) But other than that I actually quite enjoy it and find it very comforting and I would be curious to know if any of you are familiar with this author and what your opinions of his work might be. Thank you!

I read him a long time ago and really loved him at the time. I have to admit I can't remember a lot of the stories now so perhaps it's time for a re-read?

Do you remember if you read the Father Elijah series? I’m told this is the one to read.

I actually started with the Father Elijah series and loved every one of the books! I checked into them on Kindle and they are a bit too rich for my bank account right now but when I have a birthday I might have to ask someone to purchase one or two for me! LOL I could get them at the local library but unfortunately our libraries aren't open again yet.
