This Is Messed Up!

One of my best friends is Eastern Orthodox. Last year, she was received into the Orthodox Church through the Sacrament of Baptism by full immersion, as is the Eastern custom. (She was never baptized before.) Her church uses a large horse trough to baptize adults.

This past weekend, she went to an Orthodox conference, and she was supervising a teen dance. Many of the teenage girls were dressed immodestly, and this bothered her; but what really bothered her was seeing the trough she was baptized in being used to hold ice and sodas. Isn't that messed up? As messed up as this is, is doing what they did with the trough (holding sodas and all, that is) morally wrong as well? I'm not an expert, but it really does seem wrong to me. My friend was really, really upset, and I can definitely see why she would be.

What do you think?

God bless,

Jen

:(

Don't know if it is morally wrong, but I can definitely understand why your friend is upset.

Like Vera, not sure that if it is wrong, I think it would be but not sure. I would be REAL upset about that.

That's exactly how I'd feel, too, Jacob. I'm not sure if it's morally wrong, but I think it would be. It just doesn't seem that the proper dignity was afforded to something used during the Sacrament of Baptism. It'd be sort of like blowing your nose on the stole the priest uses in Confession.

I would be really upset if I was in my friend's shoes.

God bless,

Jen

Sure, Jason. That'd be cool. Thanks. :)

Wow. That must of hurt. I know I would be.

A nun once defined sacred as this.

A conscrated chalice should only be used for holy usage. A person would not use it to drink coke out of it.

I cringed at the very thought.
why would they do such a thing?
I know! That's what I was wondering, too, as was my friend. It probably doesn't cost much to buy a cooler or another horse trough to be used expressly for recreational purposes. Besides, even if the cost was high, I'd rather spend money than commit sacrilege (if that's what they did indeed do when using it to hold sodas).

God bless,

Jen

Hi Jason (again),

I just want to say, though, that I highly doubt the incident was representative of Eastern Orthodoxy as a whole. I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying that using the baptismal trough in this way would probably upset some (perhaps many) Orthodox Christians. I just wanted to point that out. :)

God bless,

Jen

Often, EOx use items for baptism that are not intended for that purpose. The kiddie pool in My Big Fat Greek Wedding is not an unlikely prospect.

Nevertheless, I'm going to go out on a limb and say, yes, this was wrong, although I do believe there are bigger fish to fry, and I know that Catholics are capable of similar abuses.

Using the Chalice for coke is an apt analogy. Once the locals where I lived disinterred a cemetery, and used the tombstones of the Black soldiers buried there (it was a national cemetery) for bricks. It strikes me as the same kind of disrespect.
