Actually about Rubio. He mostly kept his head down during the last 4 years. I say for that reason he is mostly untainted.

Bidens political obituary has been written before. I believe he ran for president in 1988 but was forced to drop out in a plagiarism scandal.  Can you imagine? Simpler times.

I permanently deleted my twitter and deactivated Facebook prior to the election, and I feel so much happier for it. Hindsight confirms the ageless wisdom of my choice.

"The truth of democracy is it makes everything political. Even the smallest act becomes a moral signifier, indicating which side you are on. This is because politics forces everyone to be a partisan. In order for democracy to work, everyone must participate, which means everyone picks a side. Partisanship turns everyone into the enemy of someone, often people they do not know. A country full of enemies is not a country, but a forest full of dry underbrush waiting for a match."

They would need to apologize all the stuff in the past though. Stuff like Goldwater being against the Civil Rights Act. Reagan and the welfare queens and so forth, just give a real acknowledgment of some of the reasons why the strife between the groups exist, and be sincere about wanting to make amends and wanting to work with a group going forward. I think you would need a major candidate like the presidential nominee or all of the leaders of the party to make it a consistent part of their message for a number of years, to reverse that trend.

Fair, although I find it kind of weird to apologize for stuff you personally haven't done. Maybe acknowledge is a better word.

Do you know why the democrats don't need to acknowledge their sordid history? I have an idea about it: the southern strategy was a real thing, BUT I think it's a little too convenient to just say "that's when the party switched," like all racist democrats instantly became civil rights sympathizers. It strikes me as dishonest anyway.

Plus Rubio is still pretty young. Memories regarding what is supposed to politically sink people have gotten shorter with time.

It wasn't democracy that did this but corporate America.  Specifically marketing departments who believe the millennial consumer prefers brands to "take a stand."  Marketing is such a ubiquitous force in a late capitalist society - I'm honestly not sure what came first - milennial penchant for dividing pure/impure or the marketing telling them it was cool.

Now one cannot be an economic actor (ie exist) without making an overt political statement. There was a time when going out of ones way to declare ones "side" was considered obnoxious and unlikable. Those days are gone...  the compulsive urge to "take a stand," sort ones self and others, the low trigger threshold, the Victorianesque angst over propriety, this all finds it's roots the latest iteration of capitalism. The academy is powerful but it did not do this to us.

Yikes.

You say "yikes" a lot. Apart from being tiresome and boring, this is also offensive. The word was originally coined in blood sport by wealthy white men to urge hounds on to chase and rip apart foxes. Just whom are you urging to rip apart who? Hmm? I will put a tin out so you can compensate me for deigning to educate you.
