So it's looking like Biden will be the next president, and the Republicans will hold the Senate.

I'm at peace with this.

  • It means we'll have someone more polite in the White House.
  • It means the Democrats will not be able to run rampant.
  • Supreme Court is safe. <-- biggest win

I don't look forward to the next few weeks/months of legal battles. Already over it.

The Senate was the important win

Has the Senate been retained though? I thought it was tied? In which case the VP votes to break the tie?

Please don't say google ... I'm staying off the news.

If it is retained I feel as you do. It will be a relief for there to be less drama. Not sure what late night tv will do, or cnn or fox with no trump to cover. Hopefully Biden does not start a war ... fear of war is 1 thing trump had going 4 him.

you're right. They are tied at 48. The dems picked up one and the repubs lost one. There are likely to be runoffs in some states.

I'm already over all of this too.

People will celebrate a Catholic President who doesn't respect religious freedom, supports abortion, and federal funding for abortion. And what's more, it will futher widespread belief that this an acceptable brand of Catholicism, and as far as they will be concerned, the only people that disagree with this are grumpy, "rigid" fuddy duddies like me. That reality is heartbreaking. I also don't trust a Vice President who views the Knights of Columbus as an extremist group that renders someone unfit to be a federal judge.

But we didn't arrive at this point overnight -- it was inevitable.

On the other hand, Americans are highly reactionary people, and for over 25 years, each presidency has lasted 8 years and has gone back and forth between parties. Trump was a backlash from 8 years of Obama, so on the flip side, at the very least we will avoid the backlash from 8 years of Trump -- I think that would have been potentially horrific, even worse than where we are at now. I don't think this election yielded any clear mandate. I'm certainly not under any delusions that 4 more years of Trump were going to somehow "save" this country. I have deep concerns that go beyond just the next few years.

But as always, God allows everything to happen for a greater good.

Well he is a Dem but I don't think that he is one of these left-wing quacks. He strikes me as historically as more on the conservative side, as far as Dems go. I don't think he'll be in a position to pander too much to the liberal wing of the party. Quite honestly he strikes me as "Trump-light" in many respects. It also looks like he won't have the Senate, and only a slim lead in the House, so he'll be forced to come to the middle hopefully.

As for what Kamala said, I think that is a bit overblown. Here is what she said:

Quote

Since 1993, you have been a member of the Knights of Columbus, an all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men. In 2016, Carl Anderson, leader of the Knights of Columbus, described abortion as “a legal regime that has resulted in more than 40 million deaths.” Mr. Anderson went on to say that “abortion is the killing of the innocent on a massive scale.” Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?

Do you have something else? I took her line of questioning essentially as an attempt to get the judge to take a public stance on the issue of abortion. The argument is "The Knights are against abortion. You are a member of the Knights. So you are against abortion too, correct?" I thought the issue there was abortion, not his membership in the Knights per se.

In general, she takes positions towards anything supporting pro-life causes and religious freedom in ways that I find problematic.

I usually don't subscribe to America magazine, but this is 2020.

I generally see Biden as actually being the type to fold like a tent to his party as he has over time. That said, the lack of congressional support will help.

She is a real problem - but her likeability ratings are always underwater. I'll be surprised if she can fix that in the time Biden has before he dies. Voters tolerate unlikeability in male politicians but its deadly for women.

My hope is that Biden will be a relatively weak place holder president for 1 term, at which point the Republicans will have reset from Trump and have turned up some fresh non cringe faces.  This election made deep inroads into Hispanic support for Democrats --- it would be effective if Republicans could pass the torch to a Latino.

Yeah, I agree, I am hoping the next 4 years will just be doldrums. It's an uncertain one because Biden strikes me as being somewhat old and frail. Out of my hands, though.

I've been very happy to see more minority involvement in the GOP.

Could be much higher if the party simply admitted and apologized for its past racism.

Heh. We can tolerate unlikeability if she's attractive!

Without getting too partisan here, yes, I agree.

As much as the subject has been controversial and uncomfortable for many on the right, I wouldn't have a problem with that.

(ETA: I agree, I am editing an answer that comes across as somewhat weak, I am just trying to avoid going down the partisan rabbit hole on the subject.)

I dunno if there is really much to argue. If you look at the data, you'll find that the average black American is more conservative in values than the average white American, on issues like religion, abortion, gay-marriage, and so forth. Yet despite that 90% of them vote for the other party? Obviously the GOP has an issue with black folks that goes way beyond policy.

I think if the GOP just said like "Yeah, in the past we were F'd up towards ya'll. We were wrong, and here is how we are going to try to make amends for it. Here is how our policy will help ya'll" the GOP could make decent headway.

I know, I was complicating my answer more than it needed to be because of the context of people debating it this year.

I am just itching for a debate Ash. Humor me.

I don't really have any issues with what you're saying, so I'm not sure why you feel the need to try to rope me into a debate, which you have been trying to do throughout this whole thread. And I'm not taking that bait.
