BeenaBobba
LoL, it's all cool with me. All I saw was confusing stuff.
I'm glad you weren't offended or anything. All Churches that make up the Catholic Church can be confusing to learn about, for sure. You should read up on them if you haven't done so already. I think you'd find them interesting. Anthony Dragani's Eastern Catholic forum at the EWTN website is a good starting point. God bless, Jen
qfnol31
I was reading at NewAdvent.org and it just seemed to contradict itself in places, first off by saying how it wasn't Roman Catholic, but then called it that again....I may be reading it wrong. BeenaBobba
Hi Zach, Here's what Anthony Dragani said in a reply about the Churches that make up the Catholic Church, and here's Mr. Dragani's response to my question on this. I hope they're of some help to you. Which article were you reading in the Catholic Encyclopedia? If you go to Mass instead of the Divine Liturgy, and if you were baptized by sprinkling, chances are you're a Roman Catholic in that you're a member of the Latin Church. qfnol31
I am a Roman Catholic, just had it all backwards. Thanx for those links!
qfnol31
It seems that the Roman Church is the Church of Rome. Would all other Churches in the Catholic Church be subject to the Roman Church?
although, no doubt, by a further extension Roman Church may be used as equivalent to Latin Church for the patriarchate
BeenaBobba
It seems that the Roman Church is the Church of Rome. Would all other Churches in the Catholic Church be subject to the Roman Church?
All Catholics, whether they're Melkite Catholic, Ruthenian Catholic, Roman Catholic, etc. are subject to the Patriarch of the West: the Pope of Rome. But that's not to say that the Roman Church is superior to the Melkite Church or whatnot. All the Churches that make up the Catholic Church are equal, but the other patriarchs and bishops are subject to the Pope of Rome, who is the Supreme Pontiff and rules over the entire Catholic Church. What that quote you posted is saying is that the Latin Church can and is usually called the Roman Church. I'm glad you liked those links. Guest JeffCR07
It seems that the Roman Church is the Church of Rome. Would all other Churches in the Catholic Church be subject to the Roman Church?
No, it would be incorrect to say this. Melkite and Ruthenien Catholics are in no way "subject" to their Latin counterparts. Rather, we are all Catholics and subject the the Holy Father. Remember, the Pope is not merely the head of the Latin Church, but of the entire Catholic Church. Imagine 22 kings, each ruling over their own kingdom. The 22 get together and swear fealty and pledge their support to one among their number. This does not put the kingdom of the one above the kingdoms of the rest, but rather, the kingdoms are still equal, with everyone deferring to the one king. I hope that helps. - Your Brother in Christ, Jeff
