Anastasia
I am curious: do Roman Catholics have to name their children only after the Saints i.e. only by a name that is in the long, long list of Saints (I do not know how you call it in English, "svyatsi" in Russian")? In our case, the tradition is to call a child by a name of the Saint close to the birth date. Can be difficult )). (it is the extreme of following the tradition) PS Among my favourite Christian names are Agatha, Anna, Nadezhda or Nadya ("hope" in Russian). Nadya is is short version. Nope, as far as I know don't directly have this obligation, but you have to kind of link the name to a patron Saint at baptism. My parents chose names they liked as first names and grandparent's names as middle names and didn't care about Saints in the first place at all. truthfinder
This is what current canon law states: Can. 855 Parents, sponsors, and the pastor are to take care that a name foreign to Christian sensibility is not given. The 1917 Canon Law was more strict, stating that parents must give a "Christian name" and that if they didn't the priest was to add a Saint's name to the given name and record it all in the register. (Canon 761) There's a wider interpretation of what a Christian name might entail, as it is not just a saint's name but may encompass various virtues (Temperance, Joy, Faith, etc)
MIKolbe
1917 CIC is abrogated by 1983 CIC, yes? Does the 1983 CIC state something similar?
truthfinder
Yes, 1983 abrogated 1917. Can. 855 cited above is from 1983.
Anastasia
Lea & truthfinder Thank you for the info. In our case, when a person was given a non-Christian name, a they are baptized with a new (Saint's) name.
Lilllabettt
What do people think of the name Henry? There are 2 saint Henry's that I kind find. But the association with Henry VIII, our archmemesis, seems really strong. Is Henry appropriate for a Catholic baby?
