Moving To The U.s.

Okay. So here's my thing.

A friend of mine recently said of Canada, "If they elect the Liberals again, I'm leaving this country and never coming back." While that may be a titch drastic, the blankety-blank blank Liberals blanking won again, and I'm in the mood for a change.

And the answer that keeps coming to mind, surprisingly, is Texas.

Here's the down low.

I'm in Oceanography. My wife's a graphic designer. We have a minivan and we're actually wonderful people once you meet us. I live in Herring Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada. I've got a shaved head 'cause that way I can claim that baldness is a choice, as opposed to a force of nature as is quickly becoming apparent. My wife has an ocean of patience.

If we were gonna move, where in that great country of yours, the You Ess of Eh, should we move?

At the moment I'm thinking Texas, as mentioned. I mean, there are catholics there, It seems there's always nice concerts, you've got the Alamo and a fantastic sense of your history, and you're in a good timezone as far as watching football goes. You're also close to Mexico. The only downsides I can think of are flying cockroaches, venemous creatures and guns. But given the choice, I'd rather have cockroaches than the Liberals, rather venemous creatures to the NDP, and I'll learn to duck and wear kevlar. So should we move to texas, or if not, to where should we move?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Comments?

Dave :)

Yep, Texas has a lot of Catholics. Too bad I live in the evangelical half of San Antonio (north side is evangelical, south side is Catholic.)

The weather here in Texas is pretty whacky. One hour it's cold and raining, the next it's hot and sunny, and back to rain all over again.

I heard that the liberals in canada were causing trouble and annoying people, but to send someone out of their country is kinda concerning.

:rolling:

In the last year we had a hurricane - state of emergency, no power or running water for 8 days.

Then, 6 months later, we got a meter of snow in 24 hours, state of emergency, couldn't go to work for a week, luckily we could burn all the fallen trees from the hurricane else we woulda frozen.

I'd love the texas weather. LOVE it.

Dave :)

I would suggest somewhere in the Midwest (like Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, etc) or somewhere along the east coast. The North East has a lot of Catholics, but many of the states tend to vote Liberal up there unfortunately. Though a major state in the North East (over 13 million people) is Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is liberal, but much of the state is conservative (it has a lot of rural areas). It's a great mixture.

But if you insist something a little more warmer, try North Carolina or Virginia.

Also, prepare to adjust! The USA has a lot of awesome things to do (it varies per location of course, some areas are just dang boring). But overall, there is a lot to do here, lots of opportunities, and a lot of people (around 290 million). You'll be suprise how much land we still have despite the amount of people who live here.

I do. It'll have to be Virginia... I can't move to NC. I don't smoke. :punch:

If you live in south Texas, you may need to learn Spanish. If you want oceanography...perhaps the west coast would be better. Seattle, I hear, is great for oceanography. Plus, there are no hurricanes. On the other side of the coin, Seattle is a very liberal city.

Bah! If you want football, I'd tell you to move to Nebraska, but seeing as we have no ocean...

I suggest living on the coasts, but since I'm an East Coaster move East! Florida is pretty nice I hear.

Mickey's_Girl

Hi Dave! I was just in Halifax last week! Go NS!!!

My knee-jerk reaction to people wanting to move to the US is "the Midwest" (I live in Indiana) because I love it so...we have lots of Catholics here, and lots of conservatism, too. :-) Oceanography might be difficult, though...pardon my ignorance, but is there stuff you could do with the Great Lakes? 'Cause they're fantastic...however, if you only work with salt-water stuff, they're out. :)

Also, most parts of the midwest are pretty sedate as far as snakes and bugs...we only have 3 poisonous snakes in Indiana, for instance (or so I've been told), and you pretty much have to live in the country to see them. Bugs aren't so bad; we do have mosquitoes, but most years they're moderate.

(FYI: Indiana is not one vast cornfield, although we do have a lot of corn. :-)

Anyway, this part of the midwest is also rich with history (Revolutionary War generals running around, Indian wars--lots of stuff to think about there, depending on your perspective), (early) westward expansion...

Oo, just a thought: St. Louis is cool, too. Also a very Catholic town. Mississippi River. Lots of cool things to do. I don't know a lot about the politics, but if you want a city, it's awesome. So is Chicago, which is right on Lake Michigan.

Might be an adjustment from Herring Cove, though. ;)

Oh, and as far as weather: our "extreme" weather usually comes down to tornadoes, but many places hardly ever see them. It's not something we live in fear of. And we do have four pretty distinct seasons; winter gets quite cold (snow level depends on where you live), and summer quite hot (and usually humid). Spring and fall are beautiful.

If you do move to the US, let us know! :)

MG

Also to take into account, just because a state has a large population, doesn't mean that area is very dense. For example, compare the West Coast (which only has 3 states), with that of the East coast (over a dozen). California may be the largest state in the country, but if you add up all the large and small states of the east coast, the east has more people.
