Quietfire
I think QuietFire's comin in or somethin
I couldnt help laugh at that. yeah, Im coming in. I told somebody that when I made up my mind I'm like a bulldozer in Reeboks. My husband says I am the 'pushiest' person he's ever met. I dont give up. I can be quite ruthless when I want to be. I just choose to learn as much as possible before I actually sit and talk to a priest. Ive asked some folks about their priests to get an idea about how they are, so it seems that in my area we may have some good men repping the Church. I'm kinda like the Adams'. Defending the Church, but in my case, without all the knowledge of her. Still learning. Peace :peace:

phatcatholic
regarding the new board, all its members so far are straight from the 'Former Catholics For Christ" ezboard. we all know how lovely that place can be..... i would love to think that the new board will be different. that Bruce will edit out the ad hominem attacks. but, i'm not holding my breath..... lumberjack, honestly, is that board a charitable place? i would happily go there and defend catholicism if i knew that it was all about presenting the facts as they see them. but, when people start talking about my "cookie wafer god" and tell me straight up that i don't know how to read, that i'm ignorant, stupid, brainwashed, delusional and other similar insults that have been vaulted against me over at the FCFC, why on earth should i join another board just like it? bruce is gonna have to prove himself before i join (not that me joining matters much to him or you anyway) pax christi, phatcatholic

phatcatholic
Whats Ad Hominen thing?
i don't know exactly what the translation is, but an "ad hominem" argument is one directed at the person who made the argument, instead of being directed at the argument. it usually amounts to criticism of the person in an attempt to discredit the argument. in extreme examples, the person who launches such an attack isn't even thinking about the argument, just about slandering the person in some way. it is inherently uncharitable and is seen by those who are familiar w/ debate as one of the weakest arguments a person could ever make. to an objective audience, the person who makes an "ad hominem" attack usually ends up looking worse then the person the attack was directed towards. of course, in some boards, these types of attacks are actually praised, everyone gets a nice little chuckle out of it, and the person it was directed towards is left wondering why he is the only one that sees anything wrong w/ it. not like i speak from personal experience or anything......... i would still like a response from lumberjack regarding my previous post. pax christi, phatcatholic Edited July 1, 2004 by phatcatholic

qfnol31
Whats Ad Hominen thing?
I'm pretty sure that the translation is against the people. I first heard it refer to the way a priest can face (versus Deum). I'm not sure how true the second is as a translation, but the first seems to fit. the lumberjack
quik reply... remember, most of the people there will probly be former catholics. there are other catholics there. I will not allow any kind of bashing for either side...strong opinions are fine, and you know I have much love for you, but I will not allow anything I think is out of line...and believe me, I'm pretty fair. God Bless.
PedroX
ad hominem = "towards the man" ie attacking the person in the argument and not their points. ad orientem = "towards the east" either literally, or referring to "liturgical east" ie facing away from the congregation during celebration of the Mass. peace...
