JHFamily
What does Chiquitunga mean and why is she called this? I've always assumed it was her name, but I have noticed in the beatification announcements that, indeed, it is not.
Sister Leticia
I'm assuming it's a pet name, from her family or the people she worked with, deriving from Chica, meaning little -and also meaning young girl. Chiquita is a diminutive - little little, so to speak, and there are variations on this in some Latin American countries (for example, chiquilla in Chile) Until now I'd never heard of the original Chiquitunga - I'd always assumed "ours" was simply using a pet name!
