28yrolddiscerner
Hi all & happy Advent! I was wondering if anyone knows of a religious community (for women) that works with the mentally ill? I haven't been able to find any. Preferably in the U.S. ThAnK YoU
beatitude
The Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma have healthcare as one of their apostolates, including work with people who have mental health difficulties. The Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have mental health care as their primary focus. They're an international congregation, founded in Spain. I don't know if they have houses in the USA, but they're certainly in Latin America. We have some of them in England and they're lovely. Bear in mind that many apostolic congregations will have sisters doing this kind of work, for example as counsellors or clinical social workers, but they don't specify this on their websites - they will just say "We are involved in different aspects of healthcare" or something like that. sr.christinaosf
I think religious from a number of different congregations would do some work with mentally ill people. I work at an assisted living-type facility and some of our people have mental challenges.
