Didacus
With the new movie coming out - one sees just how much of a polarizing character Winston Churchill was in the past as in the present. Of course, everyone in the West knows of him as a Prime minister and 'saviour' of Britain... but if you ask people from India you may be surprised as to their opinions of the man. He did hold many opinions that in today's standard may be considered as shocking... What is your opinion on this historic figure phatmass?
CatherineM
A complicated man, very much a product of his times. I’m not in favour of viewing historical personalities through our current society’s values, such that they are. I do believe our world might be very different had he not been in charge when he was. 28yrolddiscerner
I'm curious, what's the name of the movie about him?
Luigi
Churchill was neither hero nor monster. He was human. As were Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy. Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, BB King, the King of Siam, Charles De Gaulle, Pope John Paul, John Glenn, John Lennon, or any other public figure. Females included, although inadvertently not included in my minor litany. The virtues (original meaning: strengths, as of character) that helped Churchill to succeed in facing down Hitler and the Nazi military machine were exactly what he need to face down Hitler and the Nazi military machine, but those same virtues probably made him impossible to live with on a daily basis. Stick to the saints. They weren't perfect, but we know their weakness - often because they admitted them. Most publics figures weren't trying to be saints, so their are way less perfect, no matter what the historians write about then. You'll always be disappointed if you go looking for saints among public figures - as we're seeing nearly daily in the news.
Lefebvre
I'm pretty fond of Churchill. Might write-in Zombie Churchill for 2020. Zombie Churchill for President: at least he hates Nazis.
Kurt
I saw the film and really enjoyed it. Churchill was a complicated man. Yes, he had very reactionary views about colonialism, India, etc. But he was willing to break with the conservative orthodoxy of the time (and his own Conservative Party leader Neville Chamberlain) to oppose fascism. That made him more friends among the opposition socialists than in his own party.
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
All I know of him is he smoked cigars right? Much healthier way to get your nicotine hit because you don't inhale.
28yrolddiscerner
You shall know them by their fruits. He is a great man, and he kept their resolve high! God bless him!
Guest
Churchill was certainly a complex and colourful character - like all of us without exemption, he was sinner and he was saint. I thought he was a treasure and a great gift to humanity in a time of crisis.

Didacus
Truth is he was a hero to some and a monster to others, and it depends greatly on which side of history you stand. Few can see historic personas as the human being they were and balance the mistakes and good they did.
FatWinchester
He was a scumbag who only really vapid people regard as heroic On 9/19/2018 at 8:55 PM, BarbaraTherese said: Churchill was certainly a complex and colourful character - like all of us without exemption, he was sinner and he was saint. He was bad and people who love him are lame
