OwNeD_byGoD
yeah i know what you mean, its like, they dont care about the material they report on as long as it "blows" the others out of the water, not even caring about the consequences

Thy Geekdom Come
hey, let's not get too carried away with generalizations, here peeps
Yeah! Every last sweeping generalization is wrong! I don't generalize, I average.
Thy Geekdom Come
Seriously, people should realize that at least half the things I say are meant to be taken humorously. My favorite is satire, though, which is hard to do, because you want it to be obviously in jest, but still witty, so the emoticons would be out of place. Sojourner
As the resident journalist I suppose I should weigh in here ... It never fails to amaze me how many Christians are willing to decry how liberal the media is ... but no one wants to actually get into the field do something about it. I once heard a speaker who made an excellent point on this subject. He said, "Who do you think made the most difference in public perception of homosexuality: the writers working at 'Out' magazine, or the gay reporters working at newspapers around the country?" Christians have in this area historically taken a "circle the wagon" approach, and have refused to enter the fray. Then, these same people whine about how the media doesn't cover the church and Christians fairly. Huh. Go figure. Yeah, people in the media sometimes make dumb decisions about what to cover. We also sometimes hit home runs and give you information you really need in order to make good decisions. Democracy doesn't work without a free press. Thomas Jefferson once said, "The basis of our government being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right, and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to choose the latter." It's awfully easy to second-guess judgement calls on news from your armchair, and a heckuva lot tougher to make them in the heat of the moment.
It just bugs me to NO END how selfish and stupid our media is. Talk about being patriotic. I'll bet you that the media itself is the cause of a good percentage of the deaths in this war. They'd rather put the lives of American soldiers in jeopardy, than to pass up their "big bucks" paycheck.
Jake, I've come to respect you by reading your posts on various subjects, but as a reporter, this is downright offensive, and it's false on a number of levels. If you really want me to go into detail about why it's false, I'd be happy to do so in a later post. But as a starting point: "big bucks" paycheck? Right. I've interviewed people working as cashiers at record stores who make more money than I do. You don't embark on a career in mass media to get rich. Dave
As the resident journalist I suppose I should weigh in here ...
Whoa!!!! Sojourner, you forget that I'm a journalist too! You're not THE resident journalist; just A resident journalist! :irate: As for the topic at hand, I agree that the statements made were some very broad, dangerous generalizations. At the same time, however, as a conservative journalist, I can see both sides of the issue. And like Sojourner, I sure didn't make much at my job either. Jake Huether
Dave, Sojourner, I apologize if I've offended you guys. I didn't know Sojourner was in the media too. But I did write what I wrote with Dave in mind. My generalized post was not meant to include the very very very... (times a zillion) few conservative and credible journalists (like you guys!). I'm talking about the major news outlets / magazines / etc. And you are talking about writers. Sure, the writers probably make peanuts. But who do they write FOR. When I say media, I'm talking corporate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the "boss" who makes the call on what gets published?? And even if it isn't comparatively "big bucks" next to, say, an NFL superstar, the point is, it's money and publicity that drives these knuckleheads. My post is directed at the BIG time media (like national). Terrorist groups aren't looking at city or neighborhood news papers. Usually major info (like who Paul Johnson is working for, or who's a CIA op.) isn't released through city-run editorials, etc. I know I might have hit a touchy spot with you guys - but in context to what I've written, I think it's fair to say that most, if not all, nationally known news outlets are garbagio. Again, sorry if I've offended you guys.
